4. The history of Christmas.
Christmas Day
A) Christmas is a merry religious holiday when people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. A lot of grown-up people, as well as children, all over the world love this holiday. They believe that it is time when magical things can happen and all dreams come true.
B) Traditionally Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December. But long before that day people decorate streets and houses, buy presents for relatives and friends, send Christmas cards. Everybody loves to decorate a Christmas tree at home. In schools children learn special Christmas songs and poems about Christmas. They arrange performances for their parents.
C) The Christmas story comes from the Bible. An angel came to three magicians and told them that a special child was born. His parents, Maria and Joseph, lived not far from Bethlehem*. The star led the wise men to the baby, who was named Jesus. The magicians gave little Jesus wonderful presents.
D) And still the tradition to give presents on Christmas is still alive. Children place a stocking, or a sock, over the fireplace. They believe that Santa Clause can go down the chimney and put sweets and presents inside the stocking for them. People also believe that angels and elves help Santa with presents. And on the Christmas Eve magic red nosed deer Rudolf and his friends bring Santa to all good children.

MOTHER’S DAY
Mother’s day is coming. Chelsea and Sandy want to make a special present for their mother. What can they make?
“Mother loves flowers. Let’s buy some roses for her,” says Chelsea.
“Mother likes sweets, too. Let’s buy a box of chocolate for her,” says Sandy.
“Flowers and chocolate will not live long. I want to give our mother something that can live up to the next Mother’s day,” says Chelsea.
The sisters think and think, but they cannot choose the best idea.
“I’ve got an idea!” says Sandy and runs to her room. When she comes back she brings paper, coloured pencils, felt-tip pens, glue and many other things. The girls start to work; they make a surprise for their mom.
The Mother’s day comes. Mother cooks breakfast in the kitchen. Chelsea and Sandy come to the kitchen without a sound.
“Surprise! Happy Mother’s day!” shout the sisters and give their mom a beautiful poster. There are red and yellow flowers, boxes with chocolate and a nice poem about their loving mommy. The poem tells that the mother is very beautiful and can cook very tasty things, and that Chelsea and Sandy love their mommy very-very much.
Chelsea and Sandy’s mother is so happy! She kisses her daughters and thanks for the wonderful present. And they have tea with cake for breakfast together.
