My Aunt’s Impressions

…Some years ago I decided to visit my relatives. (By the way, they invited me to come to their place many times). My relatives live and work in a small town of Biryuch in Belgorod region. As for me, I was born in Saint Petersburg.

In their letters my relatives told me much about their native town. They described it as the most beautiful place in our country, they admired everything in it.

I have learned that only 8000 people live there and I couldn’t understand why such a small settlement was called a town. When I thought of Biryuch I imagined a quiet provincial town with a few places of interest. I also imagined its people who were eager to leave their home and tried to find work in the nearest town Belgorod.

I decided to come to Biryuch in summer and I was not mistaken! To my surprise Biryuch was really an attractive and a picturesque place. I forgot about my great city Saint Petersburg with its wonderful palaces, numerous museums and cathedrals at once.

Our first walk was to the river which is not far from the town. The river has got such a romantic name – “Tikhaya Sosna”. People of Biryuch care about the river and keep it clean. That’s why grown-ups and children spend much time there, swimming and fishing in it.

Together with my relatives I walked along the streets of Biryuch. I admired beautiful flowers of different colours and green trees there.

One of the streets, called Krasnaya, is the most beautiful one not only in the town but also in Belgorod region. Those who live there are very proud of it.

In Krasnaya I saw a secondary school, a park with many attractions, many shops, a sport centre, a bus station and some three- or five- storey buildings with lots of flats.  You don’t need much time to go sightseeing there and it is possible to see everything in Biryuch in one day.

As I am interested in history of Russian cities and towns I asked my relatives many questions about the history of their native Biryuch. The town has got a long and interesting history. I was advised to visit the local museum which is housed in such a beautiful building in the centre. This museum was renovated in 2005. Local people and schoolchildren visit it very often.

These are some historical facts which I have found out about Biryuch:

  • The foundation of the town Biryuch dates back to 1705.
  • In 1919 the town Biryuch was renamed into Budyony.
  • In 1928 Budyony was transformed into an administrative centre of Budyony district.
  • In 1942 the village was occupied by the fascist invaders.
  • On 23 January 1943 the Soviet troops liberated it from fascists.
  • 1958. The village was renamed into Krasnogvardeiskoye according to the decree of the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union.
  • 1975. Krasnogvardeiskoye was given the category of the settlement according to the decision of the executive committee of Belgorod Council of the peoples’ deputies.

My walk around Biryuch went on.

Later I saw the monument to Ivan Medkov which is situated in the centre. Ivan Medkov was a person who came to the settlement on the order of Peter the First to organize people to live there.

The monument to the soldiers who fell down in the battles for their Motherland made me think of difficult years of the Great Patriotic War. Every year on the 9th of May all inhabitants of Biryuch honour the memory of those who liberated their native town.

In Sobornaya Square I saw the modern building of the Cultural Centre. It is always crowded with people.

During my trip to Biryuch I had a chance to see a concert of the local singers anddancers. I felt my heart filled with joy and pleasure.

One more building attracted my attention in Biryuch. It was the Temple. It is really marvellous! It is visited by many people.

I am sure people of Biryuch have the right to say:

“We make a bow,

We thank our destiny

For that we are inhabitants of Biryuch!

Our town, our home. The land glorified in   legends”.

I fully agree with them.

If your relatives or friends will invite you to come to Biryuch someday, don’t miss a chance to do it. The town is really worth visiting!
