Modern Methods of Teaching English Grammar
The grammar of the English language, like any other, deals with the study of the structure and change of words, types of phrases and types of sentences. In other words, this is a certain set of norms and rules that are used in the construction of literate speech. With the help of theoretical knowledge of grammar, we master the structure of the language and form the skills of correct speech construction.
The process of familiarization with grammatical material and its development can be built in different ways depending on the grammatical material, learning conditions, and the teacher's teaching style.
There are two main approaches to teaching grammar:
explicit, which implies an explanation of rules and phenomena;
implicit, the essence of which is the repetition and memorization of grammatically correct structures without memorizing the rules themselves.
It should be noted that in modern education, none of the above approaches is used in its pure form. This is facilitated by many reasons, such as age, the level of knowledge of the trainees, the purpose of training, the features of the grammatical material, etc.
The explicit approach involves the use of two methods:
deductive;
inductive.
The deductive method is that the teacher gives a new grammatical rule, and students practice new structures in communication-oriented situations. In other words, learning when using the deductive method proceeds from the general to the particular, from the rule to the action.
You can consider this method in more detail based on the sequence of actions and its application.
First, the rule is studied using grammatical terms.
Students are given the task to find a new grammatical phenomenon in the text, name the form, explain the reason for its use.
Students perform a substitution exercise in accordance with the sample.
There is a transition from performing substitution exercises to transformational ones.
Translation exercises from Russian into English are carried out.
When using the inductive method in teaching, students themselves formulate the rule, study grammatical phenomena from the singular to the general. Training can be divided into several stages:
Students are given a text that often uses a new grammar rule. The teacher asks to define and formulate the rule. At this stage, it is necessary to use various prompts, such as highlighting the text in italics, in a different color, provided texts or sentences, should be clear so that students can easily identify new grammatical forms and derive a rule.
The students formulate the rule, the teacher corrects it.
Substitution exercises are performed.
transformation exercises.
Trainees perform exercises for translation from their native language into a foreign language.
In order to determine the most effective method for the formation of grammatical skills and the method for the formation of literate oral speech of students in English lessons, it is necessary to take into account their age characteristics, since each age period has its own pedagogical and psychological characteristics.
