Characters and places:

Dorothy  is the main character of this story. She is a little girl from Kansas. She is very kind and brave.

Toto  is Dorothy’s dog. Also, he is Dorothy’s best friend.

The witch of the north.  She is a good witch who helps Dorothy. She has sisters: the witch of the east and the witch of the west. They aren’t kind, they are very negative characters.

The Scarecrow.  He wants to be a great thinker, but he doesn’t have a brain.

The Emerald City.  The wizard lives here.

Useful vocabulary

appear 

to start to be seen; E.g. A woman appeared in front of Dorothy.

brick

a small, hard, rectangular block used for building (walls, roads); E.g. Dorothy followed the yellow brick road.

cornfield  

a field that is used for growing corn; E.g. Dorothy met a scarecrow in the cornfield.

crash

a breaking to pieces; E.g. The house fell to the ground with a great crash.

cyclone  

a storm with very strong winds that move in a circle; E.g. One day they were playing outside when suddenly a cyclone started.

evil 

morally bad; E.g. She was the owner of the evil witch’s magic shoes.

explain 

to make clear; E.g. The witch explained to Dorothy that it was the Land of Oz

spin

to turn quickly around a central point. (past simple  spun ); E.g. The little house spun through the clouds.

wicked 

morally wrong and bad (evil is the synonym) E.g. It was the wicked witch of the east.

witch  

a woman, usually an old woman, who has evil magic powers (sometimes kind power); E.g. It was the wicked witch of the east.

wizard  

a man who has magic powers; E.g. The wizard can send Dorothy home.

pole

a long staff of wood; E.g. He wanted to get off his pole.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Part 1

There was a little girl Dorothy, who lived with her aunt and uncle in Kansas. Her best friend was her dog, Toto. One day they were playing outside when suddenly a cyclone started. Dorothy called to her aunt and uncle, but they were not there. She ran into her house and locked herself in her room along with Toto. For hours and hours, the little house spun through the clouds until suddenly, the wind stopped, and the house fell to the ground. Dorothy and Toto opened the front door. It wasn’t Kansas anymore. It was a wonderful green land with strange flowers and the smallest houses.

A woman appeared in front of Dorothy; it was the witch of the north. She was a good witch. She explained that it was the Land of Oz and Dorothy’s house had landed on the top of the wicked witch of the east and killed her. Dorothy was sorry, but the good witch told her that she was a hero for doing it and that she was now the owner of the evil witch’s magic slippers. Dorothy had no interest in magic shoes. She just wanted to come back home. The witch told Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and the wizard who lives there could send her home. They went and met a scarecrow in the cornfield. He wanted to get off his pole. Dorothy helped him and they became best friends. He told Dorothy that he wanted to be a great thinker, but he didn’t have a brain. She invited him to come along with her to the Emerald City where the wizard could give him a brain.
