Introduction
William Shakespeare is one of the most famous writers of all. Shakespeare's plays were fantastically popular in his own time and they still are today.
Short biography
Shakespeare was born in 1564 on 23 April and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he left Stratford for London and became a successful actor and writer.
Shakespeare’s sonnets
• The Fair Youth Sonnets (Sonnets 1 - 126) : They are addressed to a young man with whom the poet has a deep friendship.
• The Dark Lady Sonnets (Sonnets 127 - 152): The poet becomes interested with a mysterious woman. Her relationship with the young man is unclear.
• The Greek Sonnets (Sonnets 153 and 154): The final two sonnets are very different and draw upon the Roman myth of Cupid, to whom the poet has already compared his muses.
Sonnet 79 by William Shakespeare
Whilst I alone did call upon thy aid
My verse alone had all thy gentle grace;
But now my gracious numbers are decayed,
And my sick Muse doth give another place.
