THE MAP OF LONDON
The main river in England is the Thames. London is situated upon both banks of the Thames. Thames starts in the Cotswold hills in England. The Thames flows through London and finally flows into the North Sea. It is the deepest river.
THE BIG BEN
London has three parts: the City of London,
the West End, the East End. The West End is
the centre of London. There are many sights
in the West End. They are, for example, the
Houses of Parliament with Big Ben. It is
interesting that the clock “Big Ben” came into
service in 1859. Big Ben is the biggest clock bell
in Britain. It weighs 13.5 tons.
The West End
The other interesting place is Westminster Abbey, which was founded in 1050. It is situated in the centre of London. In the 11-th century King Edward the Confessor decided to build a great abbey church there. There are many royal tombs in the Abbey and memorials to men and women. William the Conqueror was crowned there, and since then all the coronations have taken place n the Abbey.
The present Houses of Parliament were built after fire in the Palace of Westminster in 1834. There are two houses in the Parliament: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
The Tower of London is associated with many important events in the British history. It has een a fortress, a palace, a prison, a mint. The Tower is famous for its prisoners, like Sir Thomas More and Guy Fawkes. The White Tower was built by William the Conqueror to protect the city.
The Tower Bridge
The official London residence of the Queen is Buckingham Palace. It was built in the 18-th century.
Londoners usually watch the Changing of the Guards in the forecourt of the palace. It lasts about 30 minutes.
There are many squares in London. Trafalgar Square is one of them and it is in the centre of the West End.
You can see a statue of Lord Nelson in the middle of this square.
Royal Albert Hall – is one of the biggest concert halls in London.
St. Paul's Cathedral St. Paul's Cathedral is Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece. It was built since 1675 until 1709. It is crowned with a huge dome. Inside the dome there is the famous Whispering Gallery.

There are many museums, libraries and galleries in London. The British Museum is a very interesting place in London. It was founded in 1753.
Inside the library
The library of this museum has a lot of books. There is also the Reading room of the British Library in the museum.
The Tate Gallery is one of the well-known galleries in London.
It was founded in 1897. Henry Tate was a sugar manufacturer. He was fond of paintings and collected many pictures.
There are about 300 oils, 19,000 water colours and drawings. There are many interesting sculptures there.

The London Underground is the oldest in the world. The first line was opened in 1870. English people call the old lines the Tube, the new lines the Underground.
The London Underground is about 300 kilometres long and has almost 300 Underground stations. Some of them are closed on Sundays. Other stations are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The price of tickets is not low and depends on the distance. There are comfortable seats in the carriaes at the Underground. The walls are white or grey. There are a lot of advertisements everywhere in the Underground.
You can see escalators and lifts at some stations . Only half of the trains in London go under ground, new lines that connect London with the country go over ground.
There are many cars and buses in London.

The East End of London is the district for working people. There are many factories, workshops and docks there.
One can say that the City is the money of London. The West End is the goods of London. The East End is the hands of London.
