The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is an English – speaking country. The capital of the country is London.

There is the House of Parliament with Big Ben in London. Big Ben is the biggest clock bell in Britain. It weighs 13.5 tons.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey. It was founded in 1050 and it is situated in the centre of London now. Many great Englishmen were buried in the Abbey: Newton, Darwin and others.

Trafalgar Square

The Tate Gallery

The Tate Gallery is a well – known gallery in London. Henry Tate was the founder of this gallery. He was a sugar manufacturer and was fond of paintings. He had collected many pictures.

The British Museum

The British Museum is a very interesting place in London. It was founded in 1753. The library of this museum has a lot of books.

London Underground

London is connected with the London Underground. It is the oldest one in the world. The first line was opened in 1870. It was like a tube, that’s why it was called the Tube.

The Tower of London is a very old building. It is nine hundred years old. The Tower of London stands on the Thames. It is interesting to know that the Tower of London was a prison in early days of history of England.

Black ravens lived near this prison. Now the Tower of London is a museum. The black ravens live in the gardens of the Tower.

English people like animals

You can see a man who looks after the ravens. English people like animals. British families have got pets at home. Usually they have got dogs, cats, and birds.

The English people like tea

The English people like to drink tea. They prefer to drink tea from cups, not from glasses. They can drink many cups of tea at once. Usually they drink tea with milk.

Cricket

English people like cricket. They say that summer isn’t summer without it.

There are many holidays in Great Britain. They are Christmas Day, Halloween, May Day, April Fool Day, St Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and others.

The traditional English dinner on Christmas Day is roast turkey and Christmas pudding.

English people like porridge very much. They eat porridge with milk. English people don’t eat much bread. They don’t like to eat meat and vegetables with bread.

The English like their home. They said: “My house is my castle”.

Usually there is a fireplace in the main room of the English house. The English like to sit near the fireplace, reading newspapers and magazines.

The English people are associated with gardens, because they like to grow flowers, especially roses. They like to speak about their roses and they are proud of their roses.

Oxford and Cambridge

England is associated with Oxford and Cambridge. Oxford and Cambridge consist of a number of colleges. Each college is different, but in many ways they are alike. Each college has its name.

School uniform

It is a tradition to wear school uniforms in Britain.

The weather in England is very changeable. People in England say that they have no climate but only weather.
