The theme: “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”

The aim of the lesson: to control the pupils` knowledge about the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The objectives of the lesson: 

Educational: to activate listening and acting skills, to develop communicative skills and abilities, to revise the material about “The United Kingdom of Great Britain”

 Developing: to develop pupils` knowledge, logical thinking, to improve reading, writing, speaking, listening comprehension skills through doing a lots of tasks. 

Bringing up: to motivate pupils interest in learning English, to bringing up pupils respect to their individuality. 

The type of the lesson: revise lesson.

The methods of the lesson: Brainstorming, team work, demonstration, critical thinking.

 Visual aids: interactive board, pictures. 

The procedure of the lesson:

I. Org. moment (3 min)

 T: Good afternoon pupils. How are you? How are you feeling today? Today we have guests in our lesson. Let’s greet them

P: (in chorus) Good afternoon. We are glad to see you.

T: Our guests will watch how you will work. They will help me to control you and to estimate your answers. Who is on duty today? What date is it today? Who is absent?

(Dividing into groups) Today`s quotation:  “Many hands make light work”

Today we work together. I need your help to do our lesson more productive and useful. Are you ready to work hard? Are you ready to be active? Are you ready to work in a team?

    Let’s divide into 4 groups. You should come here and take a piece of paper. Those pupils who have such picture will be in the first group. And those students who have such a picture will be in the second group.  Now take your places. Each team has to choose  the leader. The leader appoints who (in his/her team) will answer the question. If nobody can, he/she answers himself/herself. Do you understand?   Before we start our, let’s remember some rules of teamwork. You must respect each other. You listen to each other, and to the next group attentively. You discuss every question in your team with your captain and help each other. Be very attentive, pay attention to some pictures and maps on slides, pay attention to the text of some questions. They can help you! OK?

 II. The main part of the lesson: (35 min) 1. Introducing with the theme and the aim of the lesson (3 min) T: Today our lesson will be very interesting and exciting, because we are going to take a trip to one of the most beautiful countries of Europe. It’s not only a nice trip, it’s a type of competition and by the end of the lesson we’ll find out the most active and creative group. So let start!

      What country is it? To find the answer you must guess this riddle ‘’ Four countries united to one’’  Of course, it is the UK.  Before visiting any foreign country we read books about it or look for some interesting information. We have read and learnt a lot about Great Britain. So, our task today is to brush up our knowledge about Great Britain. But before listening your answers I want you to look at the blackboard to learn some difficult words.

  • Ireland ['aɪələnd]
  • queen [kwi:n]
  • king [kɪŋ]
  • anthem ['ænθəm]
  • Edinburgh ['edɪnb(ə)rə]
  • coat of arms ['kəutəv,ɑ:mz]
  • thistle [θɪ̱s(ə)l]
  • Thames [tɛmz]

I‘d like to begin our lesson with the reminding the general information of this country.  Look at the blackboard? What can you say about each picture on it?  What do they mean? 

         Pupil1:    The United Kingdom of Great Britain. It is situated in the north – west coast of Europe between the Atlantic ocean on the north and north west and the North sea on the east. The English channel separate Great Britain from the continent.The United Kingdom consists of 4 parts. They are: England, Scotland, Wales and Nothern Ireland. The United Kingdom lies of the British Isles. The UK is one of the smallest coutries in the world. It is twice smaller than France or Spain. The area of the UK is some 244. 100 square kilometres. The population of Great Britain is over 61 million.      The smaller island is Ireland and there are about five thousand small islands.

          Pupil2:     Union Jack was officially adopted on January1. 1801 Antheme

         Pupil3:  Symbols of Great Britain Symbols: England – Red Rose. Scotland – Thistle Wales – Daffodil, Leek. Nothern Ireland – Shamrock. The capital of England is LONDON. The capital of Scotland is EDINBURGH. The capital of Wales is CARDIFF. The capital of Nothern Ireland is BELFAST. The official language is English.

     Pupil4:  The UK is a constitutional monarchy. In law, Head of the State is Queen. In practice, Queen reigns, but does not rule. The country is ruled by the elected government with the Prime Minister at the head. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

There are three main political parties in Great Britain: the Labour, the Conservative, and the Liberal parties.

 Now we have brushed  up  our knowledge about Great Britain. I think you are ready  to go to the UK.

While dividing into groups you got  a piece of paper. Now look at it. What is it?  So. then you can visit only that country which emblem you have. You must find out as more information as you can. Have a good journey
