Russian language proverbs are words of wisdom created in Slavic languages by Slavic peoples. The proverbs originated from oral history and ancient written texts dating as far back as the 12th century. The Russian language is replete with many hundreds of proverbs and sayings. The proverbs express a universal concept, have a moral lesson and provide an insight into many aspects of history, culture, and national character of the people who created them. By the 17th century, the proverbs were collected and documented. They were studied in the 19th and 20th centuries. Vladimir Dal was a famous lexicographer of the Russian Empire whose collection was published in Russian language in the late 19th century.

So, what proverbs have you got?

6. Here is a poem that provides a recipe for salad dressing. The poem was written by Sydney Smith, an English writer and clergyman, who has been described as "a man of restless ingenuity and activity," and who is also known for being the founder of the Edinburgh Review.

The poem is as follows:

Two boiled potatoes strained through a kitchen sieve,

Softness and smoothness to the salad give;

Of mordant mustard take a single spoon,

Distrust the condiment that bites too soon!

Yet deem it not, thou man of taste, a fault

To add a double quantity of salt.

Four times the spoon with oil of Lucca crown,

And twice with vinegar procured from town;

True taste requires it and your poet begs

The pounded yellow of two well-boiled eggs.

Let onion's atoms lurk within the bowl

And, scarce suspected, animate the whole,

And lastly in the flavoured compound toss

A magic spoonful of anchovy sauce.

Oh, great and glorious! Oh, herbaceous meat!

'Twould tempt the dying Anchorite to eat,

Back to the world he'd turn his weary soul

And plunge his fingers in the salad bowl.

7. Now let’s sing a song.

I like food, I like eating lots and lots of food. (2 times)

Bread and jam, and meat, and fish,

Cakes and biscuits too.

Beans and mustard, eggs and chips,

Mutton steaks, potatoes peas,

And salted mushrooms too.

I like food, I like eating lots and lots of food. (2 times)

Cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce leaves,

Chocolate and cheese,

Toast and butter, soup and spices,

Onions, cereal, cucumber slices,

Marrows, pumpkins, beets

Don’t forget I also like drinking, when I eat:

Coffee, tea and water soda,

Fruity lemonade, coca-cola,

Sugar makes them sweet.

I like food, I like eating lots and lots of food. (2 times)

Some more, please.

8. Now let’s learn a poem.

I like food, food tastes good!

I like food, food tastes good!

Juicy burgers, greasy fries

Turkey legs and raw fish eyes

Teenage girls, with ketchup too!

Get out of my way, or I'll eat you

I like food, food tastes good!

I like food, food tastes good!

I'm going to turn dining back into eating.
