Diwali.
Between 1962 and 1968 many people from India and Pakistan came to live and work in Britain. Their most important celebration every year is Diwali. This is a big festival of lights and dancing with special food and new clothes. Diwali is usually between September and November.
Guy Fawkes Night.
In November the most important celebration is “Guy Fawkes Night”. On November 5, 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. He failed and, since then, people celebrate it. They light fireworks and big fires. It is usually very cold!
Christmas Day.
On December 25th, Christmas Day, people give presents, send cards and eat a special dinner at home. The children are usually very excited because they get presents from Father Christmas (Santa Claus). In their houses, people have a special tree with lights.
Chinese New Year.
Like Diwali, this celebration moves its date each year. Usually it is in January or February. In many big cities people build paper dragons, wear masks and have fireworks, lights and music on the street.

Ss compete with each other by playing crosses and naughts.
They arrange white and grey counters between each other;
Then they decide who goes first;
If 1 S wants to put his/her counter on a square, 2 S asks him/her questions about this particular holiday:
- When do people celebrate this holiday?
- What do people do on this holiday?
- What kind of presents do they give?
If 1 S’s answer is right, he/she can close the square with his/her counter.
