I. Introduction.
Учитель:
More than 5 billion people, speaking hundreds of different languages, live in some 200 different countries and territories of the world. They live in a great variety of natural environments. Different countries have different geographical positions, different landscapes, climates and people’s lifestyles.
As you know, our lesson is devoted to presenting several projects. We’ll talk and discuss the projects on such countries as: Australia, Great Britain, America and Russia.
II. Main Body.
Учитель:
Our 1-st project is entitled “The influence of Geography on People and Their Lifestyles”
Let’s speak about Great Britainfirst.
Ученик:
I. Great Britain is an island state. It covers a territory of two large islands and several smaller ones. Its coast is over 6,000 miles long. Great Britain may be a small island by Russian standards, but geographically it is varied. The south and the east of the island consist of flat plains or hills. Mountainous areas are found only in the north and west. In Great Britain you are never very far from the coast and there are lots of seaside resorts. It has a mild climate. It is never very cold or very hot. There's steady (постоянный) rainfall throughout most of the year. The main passenger ports and airports are in the Southeast. It's a rich country, one of the richest in the world.
Эксперт: They say that English people like compromise. I’d like to know, please, what reasons of this statement you can give.
Ученик:
There is a belief that some national characteristics of people from different countries are the results from the influence of geography.
Эксперт:What do you mean?
Ученик:
The British live on a very small island with a mild climate and a history of centuries.
They rarely have severe winter frosts, and they do not normally suffer from heat, drought or flooding.
The British love of compromise is the result of the physical geography. Britain has mountains, but none of them are very high, it also has flat land, but you can't travel far without seeing hills, it has no big rivers, it doesn't usually get very cold in the winter or very hot in the summer, it has no active volcanoes. The land and climate in Britain don't have extremes. Neither do people. The British are supposed to love compromise.
Эксперт:
It seems reasonable.
Ученик:
II.America is the fourth largest nation in the world. It covers 4,500 kilometers from the Atlantic ocean on the east to the Pacific on the west. Three-quarters (3/4) of the country are washed by ocean. People live within four time zones. It's a land of physical contrasts. Practically every climate in the world is represented. The southern parts of the country have warm temperatures year round, but the northern parts have very cold winters. The land varies from heavy forests to extensive deserts, from high mountains to deep canyons. If you travel across the country you would go over mountain ranges, cross hundreds of rivers, spend days on the vast, flat prairie lands. You would drive past hundreds of lakes, woods and forests. It has most of what every country would like to have — a variety of natural resources, all sorts of products and industries of every kind.
Эксперт:
I wonder if you could tell me what facts help to explain how Americans became the way they are?
Ученик:
America is a nation of risk-takers. Most Americans are descendants (потомок) of immigrants who left the known of the Old World* for the unknown of the New.*
The frontiersmen had to overcome (преодолевать) many difficulties. This extraordinary willingness to cooperate gave a rise to American's capacity (способность) for volunteer actions.
The difficulties of the frontier also shaped the tradition of hospitality. Americans are always on the move — from one part of the country to another, from one city to another, from farm to city. So they had to be tough and self-reliant.
Ученик:
Russia is washed in the north by the Arctic Ocean and its seas: the Barents, Chukchee, East Siberian, Kara, Laptev and White Seas, in the south by the Black, Azov, and Caspian Seas; in the east by the Bering Sea, the Sea of Japan, and Okhotsk Sea; in the west by the Baltic Sea, The size of Russia is hard to imagine. A flight from Moscow to Magadan takes eight hours. Russia is a land of long rivers and large lakes. Among the world's longest rivers rank the North Dvina, the three mighty Siberian rivers: Ob, Lena and Yenisei, and the Amur. The largest of all Russia's rivers is the Volga. The three largest lakes in Russia are Baikal in South-Eastern Siberia and Ladoga and Onega in Northern Russia. The relief of Russia is mostly flat. It's located on two plains: the Great Russian Plain and the Western Siberian Plain. There are three main mountain ranges in Russia. The Caucasus stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea. The highest mountain is Mount Elbrus. The Urals extend from the Arctic Ocean to the steppes. They divide the European and Asian parts of Russia.
Russia ( СЛАЙД ) текст аудиозаписи
Russia is very large in size. It covers more than 17 million square kilometres. It is the largest country in the world. Russia stretches across both Europe and Asia. From West to East it spans almost ten thousand kilometres and has eleven time zones. The population of Russia is about 150 million people. The capital city is Moscow.
Russia is very rich in mineral resources, such as gold, oil, coal and gas. It has many long rivers and deep lakes. The Volga is the longest river in Europe and the Yenisei and the Ob in Asia. The Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world.
Russia borders many countries including Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Poland, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China and others.
Within Russia there are many types of climates. There are vast areas of cold treeless tundra in the North. Further South there are forests, steppes and mountains.
Эксперт:
Do you agree with stereotypes about the Americans, the Russians and the British?
Ученик:
I'm afraid, no. The Russians are supposed to be patient and submissive, to have skeptical outlook on life, to avoid risks. But I think that the Russians are optimists, risk-takers, independent and self-reliant. These traits help us to overcome difficulties.
Ученик:
Russia is impressed with its size and numbers. Nature has not been kind to Russia. Much of European Russia and Siberia is very cold most of the year. The harsh climate explains the Russians' strength, the ability to overcome hardships, as well as the patience and submission. Climate has also made them cautious.
The cruel climate, harsh history, and sceptical outlook (взгляд) on life have made Russians value (ценить) stability, security, social order, and predictability, and to avoid (избегать) risk.
To understand the Russians, one must know from where they come.
Ученик:
IV. Australia is the world's largest island and its smallest continent. The continent is south of the Equator. Much of the land is a useless desert. The Great Deserts : Great Sandy Desert, Great Victoria and Simpson Desert cover (покрывают) nearly 2,000,000 square kilometres. Most of the continent is sunny most of the year. Its population is very small (only 0.3% of the world's population) for such a huge country. Many people live far away from towns in the outback.* Severe droughts (сильная засуха), floods (наводнение) and cyclones happen very often on the continent. The people suffer from limited fresh water.
Эксперт:
Could you tell us how the geographical position and environment can explain some personality traits of people from different countries?
Ученик:
Can the geographical position and environment explain some personality traits of people from different countries? That's a question.
There are stereotypes about the Americans, the Russians, the British and Australians. But I can't agree with them.
Ученик:
Well, the British are supposed to be polite, to have a passion for lawns of grass and to like compromise. But my mother is always extremely polite, grows flowers and has lawns. She prefers compromise than a quarrel.
The Americans are supposed to be risk-takers and optimists. My father is a risk-taking person. He is sure that nothing is impossible for a willing heart. Besides he is tough and self-reliant. Though neither he nor his ancestors were Americans.
My conclusion.... My opinion is that people are alike in different countries, in spite of geography.
Учитель:
Well,we have just listened to the description of the geographical position, landscape and weather in the very four countries. Besides, some students represented their own points of view on the problem under discussing.
And now, answer my question, please.
Could you tell me what factors can effect the people's lives and their lifestyles, please?
Ученики:
1) Weather can effect people’s lives greatly.
2) Geographical position
3) Density of the population
4) Many other criterions effect the people's lives and their lifestyles.
Учитель:
Yes, I fully agree with you that the people's lives and their lifestyles are the results of different factors. Let’s draw a conclusion from the diagrams. I suggest you to compare several parameters of the countries under discussing.
The 2-nd project “The Best of All Possible Worlds”
Great Britain
Ученик:
I’d like to represent a project “The Best of All Possible Worlds”. I don’t want to live anywhere else but in Russia. But if I had to move to another country I would choose England. My choice depends on climate, landscape and culture. As we know, climate in Britain don’t have extremes. It is mild the whole year round. England is well-known as a foggy country.
Besides, this country has very rich historic past.
Эксперт:
What attracts you in Great Britain most of all?
Ученик:
There are a lot of churches, castles and palaces. For example, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Tower of London, Nelson’s column in the Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral and so on.
Do you know that English scientist Alexander Fleming discovered a penicillin.
Эксперт:
No, I have no idea. Could you tell me about this?
Ученик:
I guess, you should read about this fact yourself.
In conclusion, my great dream is to visit the UK.
Australia
Учитель:
And what about Australia? Would anyone like to live there?
Ученик:
Would I like to live there? I really haven’t thought about it. Australia is called ‘the lucky country‘. One reason is that the weather is so good. The sun is always shining. Thanks to warm, sunny weather, you can spend all the time outdoors. What a good chance one can have to look sunburned, to enjoy sunbathing and watersports. Well, Australia, perhaps, is a great place to live for somebody, but not for me. I can only dream to go there on real adventure holidays. So, I’d prefer to live in Russia.
America
Учитель:
I should be interesting to know if there are students who want to live in America.
Ученик:
I think it doesn’t matter much what country to live in. On the one hand each country has kept its character and charm. Besides, America is a vast country with various climates, landscapes and possibilities where you can always find a place to your liking. But, on the other hand, I can’t imagine my life in another country without Russian friends, the Russian language, the Russian traditions, Russian frost and Russian cookery...
Of course, America attracts me as a traveller. So far there are many places of interest. The country has its own unique history.
But nevertheless I’d prefer to live in Russia, in my native place; in the country where my parents have been living.
The 3-d project «Welcome to Russia»
Moscow is the heart of our Motherland (СЛАЙД )
Moscow (текст к видеозаписи)
Moscow is the industrial, cultural and political center of the country. It is the seat of the Russian Government.
During the whole history of Moscow the city always occupied the leading place in the cultural and scientific life of the Russian people. The first Russian public theatre, the first hand-written Russian newspaper and the first Russian university appeared in Moscow.
The Moscow State University is well known in Russia. It was founded by M. V. Lomonosov in the 18th century and now bears his name. The new university building was built in the 50s of the last century.
Sights of Russia
Ученик:
I have prepared the project called “Welcome to Russia”, because I love my country very much. I like its landscape, its widespread territory, its people and Russian customs and traditions. There is no such an interesting history and remarkable sights anywhere but in Russia. A lot of tourists come to our country to see its beauty and to admire its cultural achievements. As a rule they want to visit Moscow, St. Petersburg and the towns of the “Golden Ring”. There are many places of interest in Moscow but the Kremlin is the oldest historical and architectural centre. There are a lot of historical monuments, museums, art galleries and theatres in the city. The Historical Museum, the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the State Tretyakov Gallery are known all over the world. The Bolshoy, Mali and Art theatres are famous too. Unfortunately, I haven’t still visited many interesting places in our country myself. But I hope my dreams will come true in the future.
Our 4-th project is entitled “Hospitable Chelyabinsk”
Ученик:
We’d like to present a project « Hospitable Chelyabinsk». It was done by Yelena Monina and Yevgenia Napalkova. We’ve chosen this topic because we have been living here our entire life. I am in love with my native town and adore its streets, squares and prospects full of different historic events. The spirit of my town is really extraordinary. There are a lot of places of interest in our town which are worth visiting. Our town and its citizens are very hospitable. That’s why they are always ready to welcome visitors and guests of our town to walk along either the old streets of our town or the new ones and get acquainted to the most popular sights of Chelyabinsk.
Эксперт:
What do you think which places in Chelyabinsk can attract guests and visitors of the town most of all?
Ученик:
First of all they should visit the Opera Theatre, the Theatre of Young Spectators, the Picture Gallery, the Showroom, the Chamber and Organ music hall. There they will see the latest works of different kinds of art. Also they can see many places connected with the history of Chelyabinsk. In the centre of our town there is the well-known ‘Kirovka’, one of the most beautiful and popular place among our citizens nowadays. When walking up Kirovka our attention can be attracted by different sculptures. Besides, there are many new shops. In the ‘Stone Belt’, in the ‘Chinese Store’ and in the ‘World of Book’ they can see and buy interesting books and souvenirs. If our guests want to see sights of Chelyabinsk I shall take them there.
Эксперт:
Sometimes it happens so that people don’t like the towns they live in. That’s why in their dreams they often have an image of an ideal town, the town of their dreams. Are you proud of the town you live in?
Ученик:
Yes, certainly. My answer is “Yes”.
Эксперт:
OK, then you are really a lucky person, I guess.
The 5-th project «Welcome to the Urals »
Ученик:
Southern Urals was a ‘white spot’ on the tourists’ maps of the world for a long period of time. And no wonder, three of ten secret ‘close’ cities of former USSR are in Chelyabinsk Region. Today all the tourists’ resources, including natural, historical and cultural sights are open for the amateurs of journeys and excursions.
Last year my classmates and I visited The Urals and its natural reserve.
We traveled there by bus and enjoyed the trip very much because it was very comfortable inside the bus. Our journey lasted for only 2 hours. When we arrived, we were met by a good-looking man who helped us during our excursion. We climbed up the mountains and from the top enjoyed a splendid landscape. Afterwards we brought pieces of ‘minerals’ as souvenirs. On the whole, we were satisfied with our trip and got a lot of unforgettable impressions.
We invite you to visit one of the most wonderful places in Russia – The Urals.
If you arrive to us in the summer, you will be waited for many unforgettable moments. You can climb up the mountains, swim in clear lakes, fish and enjoy the magnificent nature.
If you arrive to us in the winter, you will feel severe Russian winter, go the mountainous skiing, go for a Russian sledges’ drive and skate.
Dress warmer, please!
Эксперт:
As we see, you've made your project as an advertisement prospect. Why have you chosen this form?
Ученик:
You know, it is really a very usable form to attract attention of the amateurs of journeys and excursions from different parts of our country and abroad. You can publish an advertisement in any newspaper, magazine or even place it in the Internet.
Эксперт:
OK, it is really convincing. Thank you.
III. Conclusion. (Подведение общих итогов)
Учитель:
Well, dear students, our guests and our experts, let’s make a conclusion of our work.
- What did you feel about the represented projects?
- What are your opinions about the projects?
- Did you enjoy them or not?
- What about the illustrations, descriptions, information and sound background of the
presentations?
Эксперт 1:
If you ask me, I do like the project “The influence of Geography on People and Their Lifestyles”
The students gave a good description of the very four countries. First of all, they showed the difference of landscapes, climatic regimes in the countries under discussing. More than that, making presentation they used different sources of information. They presented some diagrams and convincing arguments to explain some personality traits of people from different countries.
The illustrations and sound background of the presentation are great.
Эксперт 2:
As for me I did enjoy the projects about Great Britain (Australia and America). On the one hand, the students offered a clear explanation why they had chosen this or that topic. On the other hand Dasha made interesting illustrations and descriptions. While listening to her I could feel as if I am in London and she is our guide.
Answering the question “Where would you like to live?” the students showed their true feeling of love to their Motherland and thus we guess they are real patriots of their own country.
Эксперт 3:
I should say that I enjoyed the project about Russia and Moscow very much. In fact, Russia is our Motherland and Moscow is really the heart of our country. When listening to the story and watching the presentation we understand the beauty of our country. The student expressed his real love to the native country. It teaches sincerity and makes me happy.
Эксперт 4:
For me, it’s absolutely easy to say which of the projects take my special attention. They are about Hospitable Chelyabinsk and The Urals. The projects are absolutely great.
On the one hand the students offer a clear explanation why they have chosen such themes.
Besides, they have convincing arguments for coming the tourists to the Urals. The girls used the information from their own journey to the Urals.
More than that, the students made a lot of pictures of Chelyabinsk and other places of interest in the Urals.
On the other hand the girls stresses that the Urals should be the place where guests feel comfortable and welcome.
Учитель:
Frankly speaking, all the projects do make a great impression.
Finally, I’d like to remember the proverb ‘East or West – Home Is Best’.
Just now I’d like to thank everybody who worked hard to prepare the projects.
