Warm-up discussion:

Good morning, dear students and our guests. Our meeting today is devoted to our native village Sosnovka. We will summarize all the facts we have previously learnt and we’ll also try to answer the question “Does the youth have any perspectives in the country?” We’ve got two teams “The Proposers” and “The Opposers”. Each team will try to convince the opponents with their point of view. First of all, let’s revise the rules of the debates:

  • Work as a team and always support each other.

  • Listen to your opponents carefully.

  • Make notes while your opponents are speaking to keep track of their ideas.

  • Try to answer your opponents’ questions giving reasons for your opinion.

  • Be polite and disciplined during the debate.

  • Never interrupt each other.

  • Don’t speak longer than the time limit.

So, let me open the debate. The floor is given to the first team.

Main part. Debate Procedure:

Proposer 1: (Полина) Good morning, dear classmates, teachers and our guests. Let me introduce myself and our team. I’m Polina Kondratenko, the first speaker. This is Serezha Lushin, the second speaker and Denis Pushko is our third speaker.

Nowadays young people tend to move from the countryside to the big cities. Hustle and bustle of the city attracts them, they want to visit cinemas, night clubs and modern shopping malls. Besides, living in the capital gives opportunity to get higher education and find a well-paid job. At the same time, there are people who move to small Karelian villages and live in prosperity there (now, please, have a look at the video about Karelian village).

The motion of our team is that young people can really have nice future in small Karelian villages such as Sosnovka. Our village is situated 20 km away from Medvezhyegorsk. It is famous for its wonderful nature, amazing and clean lakeshore and friendly neighborhood. Besides, we live a very interesting life here and we believe that teenagers can have good prospects in Sosnovka.

Our first argument is that Medvezhyegorsk Milk-plant provides people with the working places on the milk-trading farm in Sosnovka. Fourty specialists work there and get constant salary. It is important to say that teenagers can also apply for a part-time job on the farm and save money on education.

Our second argument is that a lot of families run their own fishing business. In autumn we start the loyal catching of vendance and white fish. Many people, including teenagers earn money taking fish out of the nets. The average wage riches 1 thousand rubles per day. There is no doubt

that such opportunity is a great advantage of living in Sosnovka.

Our third argument is that Sosnovka is situated only 20 km away from Medvezhyegorsk and it takes 30 minutes for people to get to their working places.

Finally, living in the country is better because we breathe fresh air, drink clean water and we can walk safely on quiet streets. It is especially important for mothers strolling with their babies.

To sum up, our team strongly believes that Sosnovka needs young generation to improve the economical situation, to create new working places and to make the life full of exciting events. Thanks for the attention.

Time-keeper: Thank you, Polina. Would you like to ask some questions to the speaker?

Opposer 3: (Артем) Yes.

Time-keeper: Now the floor is given to the second team.

Opposer 3: The speaker stated in her speech that teenagers in Sosnovka may have nice future. Polina, would you answer some questions? What is the number of population? Do you know how many new-bornes were last year?

Proposer 1: Thank you for your questions, I’ll try to answer them. According to the official statistics, 527 (five hundred twenty-seven people) live on the territory of our village. 52 of them are the pupils of Sosnovskaya Secondary school. Last year six babies were born. We also have to say that 35 children attend our local Nursery school. These numbers say that the birth rate is gradually increasing and this is a very good result. Having all this above, we confirm that Sosnovka keeps developing.

Time-Keeper: Thank you. The motion is opposed by the second team. The floor is given to the Opposer 1.

Opposer 1: (Андрей) Good morning, dear classmates, teachers and our guests. Let me introduce myself and our team. I’m Andrey Pirogov, the first speaker. This is Nikita Grusdov, the second speaker and Artyem Molchanov is the third speaker. The motion of our team is that young people have much more possibilities in big cities and they don’t have to stay in Sosnovka.

Our first argument is that young specialists cant’ find a job in the village.

The most popular professions are :

  • shop assistants

  • postmen

  • teachers

  • milk-maids

  • vets

  • zootechnicians

  • cattlemen

Our second argument is that seasonal work doesn’t provide people with constant salary.

Besides, in summer people spend free time on the lakeshore. And such visits are not always safe.

Finally, we claim that young people should move to the big cities. Thank you for the attention.

Time-Keeper: Thank you, Andrey. And the floor is given to the proposers. Welcome with the questions, please.

Proposer 3 (Сережа): The speaker tried to change our minds saying that young people don’t have the places for going in for sport. But we usually play sport games in the school yard. More than that, we have lots of places for playing football, volleyball, swimming and skiing. Isn’t it enough for keeping healthy way of life?

Opposer 1(Андрей): Thank you for your question. You’ve got the point, but the problem is that young people can’t go in for professional sport. We need the gym and the stadium. That’s why most of the pupils attend football, volleyball and boxing sections in Povenets, Pindushi and Medgora. And this proves our idea that teenagers should move to big cities.

Proposer 2 (Serezha): Yes, but you shouldn’t forget that we often take part in local and regional competitions. It proves that teenagers can become professional sportsmen living in small villages.

Time keeper: So, the question time is over. And I give the floor to the speakers to sum up the ideas of your teams.

Opposer 2 Nikita: Dear students and guests. We believe that Big city life is different from the life in a village.

  • At first, there are many schools, colleges and universities where children can study.

  • At second, cities also provide modern treatment

  • Finally, Big City Life is more appealing for young generation. It is full of exiting activities such as going to night clubs, cafes and football matches.

It is the chance to live your lives, don’t miss it!

Time Keeper: Thank you, Nikita. And now I give the floor to the opposite team for their final speech.

Opposer 3 (Denis): Dear audience. Of course, life in small villages is different from the cities, but still it has its advantages. Everyone knows that city life is very unhealthy. People suffer from the pollution and stress. Country living is better because of clean air, water and food. Besides, people in the country are kinder and friendlier, they are always ready to help.

We live in a wonderful place Sosnovka. We go to a good school and achieve high academic results. Some of our schoolmates live in Povenets, but study in Sosnovka. What is more, lots of students get higher education in Petrozavodsk and Saint Petersburg but they get back to Sosnovka, because they find a good job here. Let’s remind their names: Andrey Gubarev, Anatoly Soikin, Sophya Tomashova and so on. Besides, our parents are very proud of Sosnovka. So, why shouldn’t we?
