Оформление доски:
Mother Planet is showing us the red warning light – be careful – she is saying. To take care of planet is to take care of your own house.
The Dalai Lama
The Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the Earth.
The nation that destroys its soil, destroys itself. Franklin Roosevelt
I Вводное слово учителя:
Dear friends! We live in a beautiful and surprising world. But this world is in danger now. Today we are going to speak about ecology and environmental protection. Ecological problems have become global nowadays. That’s why the motto of our lesson is “Look after this planet, it is the only one we have”.
II Звучит музыка из к/ф «Титаник», ученик читает стих.
The Earth is a garden,
It is a beautiful place
For all the human creatures,
For all human race.
Helping Mother Earth
We can peacefully roam.
We all deserve a place,
We can call our home.
And we would like to thank you,
Mother Earth.
We’d like to you dressed
In green and blue.
We want to be loved by you.
T: What feelings did this poem provoke?
P1: I want to protect our nature and our planet from destroying.
P2: We should be caretakers of the Earth.
P3: We can all do something to make the world a better place
P4: I feel that all things in nature are related. So, harmful human activities make the environment unhealthy.
III T: Let`s speak about harmful human activities. I know you have some interesting information. Please, listen to the information prepared by your classmates and be ready to discuss it.
The Ozone Hole
Text 2
The ozone layer. Up in the sky, above the air we breathe. there is a layer of gas called ozone. It helps us by blocking out rays from the sun that can harm our skin, and by letting the rays that are good for us come though. We are lucky to have the ozone layer to protect us.
What is happening. Now the ozone layer is being damaged by gases that people have made. The gases are called CFCs – chloro – fluoro – carbons. They are used in refrigerators, fire extinguishes, air – conditioners, plastic foam and some other things.
How it happens. The CFCs float up to the top of the atmosphere where the layer of ozone is and “eat up” the ozone.
Scientists are concerned about the ozone layer because of it has gone away in just a few years. So it is important that we learn to do something about it.
Air Pollution
Text 3
The old days. Until about150 years ago, the air was clean and pure – perfect for the people and animals to breathe.
Factories. Then people started building factories. Those factories and many of the things they make, like cars, put a lot of harmful gases into the air. Then people started driving cars, which added more pollution to the air.
Today. Today the air is so polluted that it is not always safe to breathe.
The brown staff. Many cities around the world have air filled with a pollution called “smog”. This is so strong in some places that the air which should be blue, actually looks brown.
Down with the pollution. Polluted air is not only bad for people and animals, but for trees and other plants as well. And in some places it is even damaging farmers’ crops – the food we eat. So it is very important for us to clean up the air we all breathe.
Water Pollution
Text 4
The planet Earth is mostly water. Oceans cover the biggest part of it – there are lakes, rivers, streams and even water underground. All life on Earth – from the least bugs to the biggest whale – depends on this water. It is precious. But we are not doing a good job of keeping water clean. In many places the water has become polluted. Rivers and lakes are polluted by garbage or by poisonous chemicals which are dumped right into them. Underground water can be polluted by gasoline or other harmful liquids that seep into the ground. Some fertilizers and pesticides used on farms leak down through the dirt, too.
The ocean which is a home to so much life has been used as a place to dump garbage and poisonous chemicals. It is getting polluted, too.
We need to save our water, to keep it clean and healthy so people, plants and animals will always have come to drink. And so fish and other creatures will have a place to live.
Acid Rains
Text 5
Up in the sky. When we look up, we see clouds and the blue sky. But there are other things in the sky that we don’t see. Some of these are harmful to the Earth.
What happens. When power plants burn coal to make electricity and when cars burn gasoline invisible gases are released into air. Some of these gases can mix with rain or snow and make it acidic, like lemon juice or vinegar.
What can happen. Sometimes gases get into rain clouds where they get mixed in with rain or snow. Then the acid falls back to earth with rain or snow. This is called acid rain.
Bad news. Acid rain is extremely harmful to plants, rivers and lakes, and the creatures that live in them. In some places it is killing forests. And it pollutes the water that animals and people need to drink.
Our mission. It’s very important for us to stop making acid rain. One good way is to drive our cars less. Another good way is to save energy. The less energy we use the less fuel those power plants have to burn. Industrial countries should control their

IV Listening
T: We have spoken about ecological problems. But there is only one main threat for our planet. It`s a “strange animal” please, listen to the text and try to guess who is this strange animal?
a) new words: habitat – ареал
to cause – являться причиной
b) listening (2t)
A Strange Animal
Imagine an animal that can live anywhere. This animal lives in Mongolia and in every other country. It can fly very fast and swim slowly. This animal can walk and run, but it likes to ride on the backs of other strange animals because it can make everything.
However, this strange animal does not know where to put the things, it makes when it does not need them. These things may last longer than this strange animal. They can make this animal`s habitat dirty and unhealthy, and this animal may become ill. They may also cause harm to other animals and plants and to their habitats.
c) T: Have you guessed? Who is this strange animal? Draw it, please
CL: It is a man
T: You are right. A man is a clever living creature, but at the same time he is the silliest one, because he can destroy not only himself but the Earth, too. Let`s read about the world we live in
V Reading:
a) new words: to keep up – быть в курсе
device – прибор
harm – вред
contamination – загрязнение
topical problem – актуальная проблема
emission – выброс
acid rains – кислотные дожди
thermal power plant – теплоэлектростанция
greenhouse effect – парниковый эффект
survival – выживание
purification – очищение
recycling – вторичная переработка
wastes – отходы
We live in a changeble world where it is very difficult to keep up with new ideas and inventions
Our life becomes more comfortable and more interesting. We get to know about the smallest details of a child`s birth and space computers have become the part of everyday life, we use new devices which make housework much easier. But we seldom think that the majority of inventions, new technologies bring harm to a man.
Today the greatest problem for humanity is pollution. Pollution is contaminaton of the environment including air, water and land. This problem is extremely topical for heavily industrilised cities. Uncontrolled emissions of harmful substances and dust pollute everything around us. Very often they are the reason of acid rains which fall miles away from the plants and poison earth and water. It is worth mentioning that one third of all emissions into the atmosphere originate from automobile transport.
In 1986, Chernobyl` disaster showed that nuclear energy can be extremely dangerous. Research data show that significant areas of agricultural and forest lands of Ukraine will remain unsafe for a man for 8000 years.
Another problem of big cities is wastes. The wastes from plants and factories contaminate water and soil. It has become dangerous to drink unboiled water or eat vegetables and fruit.
These are only some of the problems of the environment. The list may be endless. All these factors threaten mankind and nature, reduce their life, even kill them.
Millions of people all over the world fight against pollution. It is very important that every person should be responsible for ecologically clean world and act correspondingly.
Work in groups:
After reading
1 T: Answer the questions to the text.
a) What is the greatest probles for humanity today?
b) What is pollution?
c) What did Chernobyl`disaster show?
d) What can be done to protect nature and human life?
2 T: Mark the sentsnces true or false:
a) Inventions never bring harm to a man.
b) Computers have become the part of our life .
c) The problem of pollution is extremely topical for low inhabited areas
d) Present automobile transport is safe for the environment
e) There are numerous wastes recycling plants everywhere
f) It is necessary to use purification equipment, new recycling technologies; to learn to use nature sources of energy
3 T: Find the facts about:
- the part of everyday life;
- the greatest problem for humanity;
- Chernobyl`disaster;
- the contamination of water and soil;
- fighting against pollution
VI T: I want to know how you understood the topic and grammar.
Grammar revision.T: Match a line in A to a line in B columns
A
If cars and buses continue polluting the air,
If more holes appear in the ozone layer,
If the temperature on the earth keeps growing,
If people do not care about the environment,
B
People will suffer from a lot of diseases.
The number of people having cancer will increase dramatically.
We`ll face the danger of global warming.
Our planet will soon turn into desert
T: Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense. If there is no verb in the sentence, use if, when, as soon as. Polar Test
British explorer Robin Drake says before the first international Polar expedition:
“We (do) a lot of experiments to see how much pollution there is in the area. The results (help) us to understand the effects of pollution of the planet, including holes in the ozone layer and the greenhouse effect. ... the weather (be) good enough, we (make) a film of the expedition. ... we (get) back home, we (show) it to people all over the world.”
T: give synonyms to the corresponding words:
rubbish
pollution
to protect
environment
to ruin
disappearing
waste
dangerous
to re – use
Conclusions. Reflection.
Dear friends, I want to thank you for your work. So, our lesson is coming to the end. Don`t forget that the Earth is our home and to preserve it we should remember three simple laws of ecology suggested by Barry Commoner, the biologist, in his book “Making Peace with the Planet”.
1 Everything is connected to everything else.
2 Everything has to go somewhere.
3 Let nature take its course.
Home assignment
T: Your hometask for the next lesson is to write an essay about the ecological situation in Lugansk region.
