Today we are going to speak about one of the holidays in Great Britain – Christmas. Please, read the words. Let’s make sure you know these words. (PP read and translate words)
Think of verbs which go with “PRESENT”. (PP: choose a present, send a present, put a present under the Christmas present, open a present) Now you will work in pairs. I want you to make collocations with following words. Later we compare them.
Christmas card. (Write a Christmas card, send a Christmas card, open a Christmas card) Christmas tree (Choose a Christmas tree, buy a Christmas tree, decorate a Christmas tree, put a star on top of the Christmas tree, put presents under a Christmas tree) Decorations (Put up decorations, take down decorations) Snowman (Make a snowman, dress a snowman) Turkey (Buy a turkey, stuff a turkey, roast a turkey)
Students give their answers and the teacher writes up the most typical collocations.
2. Christmas is the best holiday for most British families. How do English people celebrate Christmas? Use our expressions to make up a short story.
Students work in small groups. They describe Christmas traditions and customs.
3. We are going to watch a short film in which you will see a family home on Christmas Eve where everything has been prepared perfectly for Christmas Day, but that fat family cat called Mog caused a series of calamities which ruin everything.
Learn some new words you’ll hear in the film:
calamity – бедствие, катастрофа
bat – бита
domino effect – эффект домино, цепная реакция
dial – набирать
deserve – заслуживать
ruin – разрушать
Try to predict how you think Mog can ruin Christmas Day.
(Give students an example such as, “Mog climbed on the table and ate all of the turkey.” Give them five minutes to come up with things that Mog could do to ruin Christmas.
Did you like the film? Why? Why not?
Were your predictions right or wrong?
4. Now you will work in pairs. Let’s see if you watched the film attentively.
Students do a test. (См. Приложение 1.)
5.1. Put your students into small groups. Give them the post-viewing questions. Ask them to look at the questions and make some notes.
How did the film make you feel?
What words would you use to describe the film?
What adjectives would you use to describe Mog?
Do you think Mog the Cat is a hero?
In their small groups students compare their notes, discuss the questions and make a short report.
5.2. Work as journalists and write a newspaper report about Mog, the heroic cat.
Students write a short story using the plan. (См. Приложение 2.)
6. Reflect on the lesson
What did you learn about Christmas from the lesson?
