Theme: Science on the service of mankind, 8 form
Learning is a precious gift tobe treasured always.
Skills to be emphasized: reading, speaking, discussing.
Target structure: conditional sentences.
Target vocabulary: words connected with sciences.
Procedure:
Teacher: We live in the era of sciences and hi- technologies. Scientists, engineers and designers are eager to improve living standards of the countries. One can hardly imagine our life without: air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, electric kettles, cookers, phones… The theme of our lesson is science on the service of mankind.
Activity1: a) pronounce words of sciences ( written on a board), translate them.
b) express in one word:
1. Something resembling a net of numbers, parts and lines - a table.
2. The same as very big, great, tremendous - huge.
3. A collection of data that you can get in the internet – database.
4. Electronic mail – mail.ru
5. To look over carefully or to examine thoroughly in order to find something – to search.
6. A facility of providing people with the use of something – provider.
c) give synonyms: method – way of doing; discover – to open; management – skilful treatment ; target – plan; broadcast – to send; net – open material of string, hair, wire; participate – take part.
Activity2:Answer the questions. What sciences do you learn at school? What are your favourite?
p.1 - I like Physics, because it is interesting, my future job will be connected with it.
p.2 – I like Information studies, because I am fond working with computers.
p.3 – I like Astronomy, I am interested in space, stars, the Earth.
p.4 – I like Biology, I want to be a doctor, help people to live, not to be ill.
Activity 3:Now I will give papers with the texts “ Sloths”.
Read the text, translate into Russian, put the verbs in right way. There are some unknown words: twigs – стебли; predators – охотники; algae – водоросль; remain – оставаться; – вымершие. I will give you ten minutes. Let’s check reading.
Activity 4:Checking home-work. Presentation of sciences. On a board you see the criteria of works: a) quality of slides
b) pronouncing of words
c) the content of topics
Well done. Whose projects are the best? And why?
Activity 5: Some additional reading. Extra reading. Journey into space. SB p.
Activity 6: How do we use sciences in our life?
p.1 – Scientists have made new discoveries in different spheres.
p.2 – Household appliances help to save our energy and time.
p.3 - We use possibilities of internet, access to information, computers, communication. You can be quickly connected with web camera net, can talk with people who are far away. Our classrooms are equipped with whiteboard, projects, sound system.
Activity7: Listening the text. Comprehension reading. Doing tasks.
Home -work. Marks. Retell the text.
