Teacher: And now you will listen to the dialogue, then you should find out
true/ false sentences.
Maria: So, how did the street collection go on Saturday? Do you think it was worth doing?
Paul: It went ok I suppose. We raised almost ?450 but to be honest I found it a bit depressing.
Maria: Why?
Paul: Well, we were in the city centre right where all the shops are, and there were loads of people walking around. Most of them had bags and bags of shopping but so many of them went straight past us without even giving us 5p! I just can’t understand it.
Maria: There are street collections every week now so I guess people just don’t want to give money to everyone. Though I must say I agree with you. How many of you turned up to help in the end?
Paul: There were ten of us altogether. I was there all day, as I’d organised it and I wanted to make sure that everyone knew what they were doing. We handed out leaflets and stickers and we also gave balloons to the children – that way the parents felt that they had to give us a donation! Quite a good idea, even though I had to blow up most of the balloons myself.
Maria: At the end of the day, every little helps so you should feel really pleased. So what’s next on the events programme?
Paul: We’ve got a committee meeting next week to talk about the rest of the year. Do you fancy coming along? We could do with some new people. We’ve all been working together for quite a long time now and it’s hard to come up with new ideas.
Maria: No problem. Actually I was going to ask you about joining up, as I’d like to get involved. I was at another charity concert last week and I won a prize in a competition at the end. You’ll never guess what it was...
Paul: Tell me.
Maria: It was a parachute jump so I could use it to raise money for your charity. If we get enough publicity, I think we could raise quite a lot of money.
Paul: Wow! Jumping out of a plane is a crazy thing to do! Good for you. I’m sure the local paper would write an article about you, and then you’d definitely get more sponsorship money.
Maria: Good idea! Listen, I’ve got to go, but I’ll give you a call later, OK?

About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play
The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny
I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules
The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain.
