Ход урока:
I. Вводный этап. Организационный этап.
- Good morning, students, take your seats. How are you today? I'm fine, too, thanks. What's the date today? Who's absent today? All right.
- Before we start, I'd like you to answer some questions of mine. Have you ever been to a mill? What impressed you most there? Would you like to go there again? Did you guess what we're going to talk about today? Look at the sheets of paper you've got on your desks. What's the title of the text we're going to read? What do you think it is about? All right.
II. Основной этап.
- Let's do some tasks before we start reading. First of all let's remember the British English spelling of the words "center", "neighbor". Ok.
- What's the Russian equivalent for "You're known by the company you keep"? Do you agree with this statement?
- Read the text aloud.
- As we've read the text, find what places these are about (задание распечатано на карточках):
a). is noted for its southern cooking.
b). one of the area's biggest attractions and most photographed locations.
c) If you still haven't satisfied that sweet tooth, step into. where frozen treats are made on site.
d). a remarkable neighbor just across the street, where they sell dulcimers, hammered dulcimers, bowed psalteries, mandolines and music accessories.
e) A lively center for crafts and shopping.
- Answer questions:
a) Why was the river named the Little Pigeon?
b) Where is the Old Mill situated?
c) How can one catch a glimpse of what goes on in the Old Mill area?
- Good. The next task is to find words in the text that mean (задание распечатано на карточках):
a) made by a person, not by a machine, and usually made with great skill (key: handcrafted);
b) to be present in large numbers or amounts (key: to abound);
c) to stop a river or stream from flowing by building a dam across it (key: to dam up);
d) to record an event in a film or photograph (key: to capture);
e) done for pleasure instead of as a job (key: amateur);
f) very small pieces of stone or sand (key: grits);
g) from a point where nothing has been done, so that you have to do everything yourself (key: from scratch).
- Excellent. Now make up sentences using these phrases. Good.
- Imagine that you are an advertiser. Choose any of the attractions described in the text, and make us sure that we ought to visit the place you are advertising. You've got 4 minutes to complete the task. Let's listen to what you've prepared. Wonderful!
- As you've listened to these ads, what place would you like to visit first of all? Explain your choice.
III. Заключительный этап.
- Let's draw a conclusion. Was today's lesson interesting for you? What was new? What did you already know? Would you like to visit the Old Mill in Pigeon Forge?
- Write down your hometask for the next lesson (задание написано на доске). You'll have to work in pairs. Make up dialogues. Pupil I has just returned from Pigeon Forge and Pupil II is going there next month. Ask and answer questions about this resort city.Thank you for your work, your marks are:.. The lesson's over, good-bye!
