Good morning, my dear pupils! I’m glad to see you. How are you?

So we are going to start our lesson, are you ready?

Let’s start our work.

You have worksheets on your tables. In the first task you need to make some sentences from the words in the word cloud. (Elicit from the word cloud the topic of the lesson).

Can you guess the topic of the lesson? Today the topic of our lesson is “They have stood the test of time”. How do you understand this statement? What authors have stood the test of time? About what modern writers can you say that they will stand the test of time?

There are just too many books in the world, and far too little time. Somebody once said “Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all”. Of course, then you could get into an endless debate with yourself over what exactly makes a book “the best.” You could ask five million people that question and get five million different answers. Or, you could just take advantage of time thing, which helpfully sorts and filters and shows us which books remain relevant and remarkable generation after changing generation. These are the books that stand the test of time because they magically manage to speak to the fears and hopes and people still read them through years and centuries. Today we’ll touch classics and I hope you’ll appreciate it.

But first of all I`d like to show you the names of some literary works. Look at the screen. Let’s develop our pronunciation.

Do you know the authors of these works? Which one have you read? Can you guess what are they about? Which one would you like to read?

Have a look at the next slide. You see pictures of three people.

What are their names? What do you know about them? Do you read classical literature? Who is your favourite author? Is it necessary to read classical literature?

Now we’ll read biographies of these world-known writers. As we have three texts, I will divide you into three groups: A, B, and C. Open your books to page 207, exercise 2b and read you text and fill in the table about the writer you have chosen.

Complete the sentences. Give as many ideas as possible. Use the facts from the texts.

A new study shows that 62 per cent of us pretend to have read classic novels in order to appear more intelligent. The most popular trick is pretending to have read classic novels, with 42 per cent of people relying on film and TV adaptations, or summaries found online. Surprisingly, but adults questioned admit to having displayed books on their shelves without ever having read them.

Do you know why? Why do people afraid of reading classics?

I think we should help them to get rid of their fears. We’ll make a book of wishes to the readers of classical literature. Take these cards and write down your wishes.

Now one by one go to the black board and read your wishes.

You know when you read a good book and turn the last page, you feel a little as if you have lost a friend. I wish you to lose friends only this way. Read and enjoy your reading.
