Stalingrad. The Battle of Stalingrad was a decisive turning point in World War 2 in Europe. Moscow was named a Hero City on May 8, 1965, on the 20th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. There are a lot of monuments devoted to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. For example, The Tomb to the Unknown Soldier, a huge memorial complex with a Museum, built in honor of the Second World War, is located on Poklonnaya hill. Its Grand opening took place on may 9, 1995. Just now we`ve received a very interesting letter from our pen-friend who lives in Volgograd. Let`s read it! You’ve got 2 minutes to look through this task in your handouts. Put the paragraphs of the letter into chronological order. Complete the table after the text. Go to the blackboard and make the task. Then you should read and translate your sentences.
Thank you for your letter. It was lovely to hear from you again. I haven’t written for a long time because I was busy with my exams.
You asked me about my native city. Well, the city where I live is called Volgograd. Its previous name was Stalingrad. It's a legendary city, because here in 1943 the Soviet Army won the great and glorious victory over the fascists. Every year thousands of tourists come to Volgograd. They want to visit the famous historical places of our city to honour the memory of those soldiers, who died here for the freedom of our country. The symbol of Volgograd is the Mamayev Hill. I feel proud of living in the Hero-city.
Where do you live? Do you know anything about Hero-cities? How do you celebrate Victory Day?
Well, I have to go now. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.
All the best,
Mike
