Т: The most popular kind of transportation in London is the London Underground. Londoners call it the “tube”. Let’s read interesting information about it. (Card №3)

HOW OLD IS LONDON’S TUBE?

The London Underground, or “tube” as it is often known, was the world’s first city underground railway. It began operating in 1863, when the Metropolitan Railway opened a line between Paddington and Farringdon. Even in those days traffic jam caused by the horse drawn vehicles generated complains and letters to The Times, and as a result construction work began on the underground railway in 1860.

Although Londoners were originally sceptical about the project, calling it “the sewer railway”, the service was an immediate success. Trains were steam operated.

Now the numeral lines of the Tube help yearly millions of British subjects and tourists from all over the world reach their destinations – museums, shopping centers and other attractions of the British capital. At the Tube one can buy a daily or a monthly card to travel within a certain area.

Nearly 1,3 billion passenger journeys were made on London buses in 2008. In that year London buses ran 358 million vehicle kilometers. The familiar double-decker buses are one of the most distinctive sights in London and no visit to London would be complete without a trip on one of them. Shops sell many things representing the famous London double-decker such as tea caddies, teapots, photo frames and other things to attract tourists.

Sewer- канализация;

steam- пар;

caddy- чайница

T: Complete the sentences using the information from the story. (slide №6)

1. Where did the first underground appear?

a) in New York

b) in London

c) in Moscow

2. When did the Tube start working?

a) in 1863

b) in 1869

c) in 1860

3. How many decks have London buses got?

a) two

b) three

c) one

4. Where can you see pictures of double-deckers?

a) on postcards and posters

b) on teapots and tea caddies

c) on clothes and shoes Key: 1.b); 2.a); 3.a); 4.b)

Travel agent: Oh, there are a lot of special tours. They’ll take you to all the important remarkable places. Um… just a minute. I’ll give you some travel brochures. You can choose yourself. There’s a lot to see.

Visitor: Thanks. That’s great. I’m interested in British history and literature. And what’s the weather like in August?

Travel agent: August? Um… It’s usually quite warm.

Visitor: Warm? Oh, good. Um… Can you tell me anything about travel procedures, what travel documents do I need? How much money can I take? Things like that.

Travel agent: All that information you’ll find in the leaflet. Here you are.

Visitor: Great. Thanks. Oh! One more thing…

Travel agent: Yes.

Visitor: Can I take my dog with me?

Travel agent: Your dog?!! Oh, no, taking pets on holidays to the UK is not permitted.

Visitor: Oh. What a pity! Well… Thank you very much for your help and leaflets. See you soon.
