T: Good morning, boys and girls. I am glad to see you. Children, we have talked a lot about the USA and Great Britain. We have spoken about the political systems in those countries, about big cities, about the population, nature, geography, but it seems to me, we haven’t spoken enough about national holidays and traditions.
At this lesson some of you will tell us about Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, St.Valentine’s Day, about Easter, Mother’s Day, about Independence Day in the USA and other holidays and traditions. Let’s begin with New Year’s Day.
P1: The first of January is New Year’s Day. Many parties are given on this night. The theatres, night clubs and restaurants are crowded. When midnight comes, everyone at the party stops, whatever they have been doing to greet the new year.
The favourite song at the New Year’s Eve party is “ Auld Lang Syne”. It was written by Robert Burns. The merry- makers always sing part of it.
T: On the 14th of February the English and the Americans ctlebrate Saint Valentine’s Day. Will you tell us about this holiday. )
T: You know that the Americans celebrate Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June. Now we’ll hear about these holidays
T :Now we shall speak about a very great holiday, Easter.(Ученики показывают раскрашенные яйца и рассказывают о пасхе.)
T: Now we shall hear about the national holiday in America. It is Independence Day.(Ученики рассказывают о дне независимости.)
T: Many years ago people believed in devils and witches. Children put on masks and went to the streets to beg. It was Halloween Day.(Показывают тыкву со свечой внутри и рассказывают.)
T:And now I’ll read a little story about a national holiday in the United States-Thanksgiving Day.
Pilgrim-1)паломник, 2)странник;
Pilgrim Fathers -английские колонисты, поселившиеся в Америке в1621г.;

The bells are ringing!
We are dancing,
Laughing,singing.
We are singing
Loud and clear
Christmas!
Christmas time is here!
One of you will tell us about this holiday.(Рассказ о Рождестве в Америке и в Англии.)
T: Now let’s sing a traditional Christmas song “Jingle, Bells”.

-No one knows for sure. The custom of bringing an evergreen tree indoors and decorating it at Christmas started in Germany. One legend says that Martin Luther started the practice. Luther was an important Christian leader. According to the story, he noticed the starlit sky as he walked home one Christmas Eve about the year 1513. He thought the stars looked as if they were shining on the branches. When Martin Luther arrived home he placed a small fir-tree inside the house. He decorated it with lighted candles.
Decorating Christmas trees became popular in Germany. Prince Albert took the tradition to England. Both German and English people brought it to America.
T: And now will you tell me in Russian how the tradition of decorating Christmas trees appeared.
T: Thank you very much. And now a new task for you. Read the text “ Christmas” and fill in the missing words. They are given after the text.

T: Of course, it’s only a dream and a joke. But we must have what our fortune brings us and not to be like a fir-tree in this fairy-tale. Now, please, listen to my story, try to understand it and find an appropriate proverb to this story.
The Little Fir-Tree.
A little fir-tree lived in the forest. It had leaves like long green needles. It was a pretty little tree, but it was not happy. One day it said,”I do not like needles. My needles are hard. The birds will not nest in them. All the other trees have leaves. I wish I had green leaves.
The next day, when the little tree woke up, it had green leaves. It was just like the other trees. “Now I am happy”, it said. But a goat came and ate all the green leaves. “Oh!” said the fir-tree, “I wish I had gold leaves. Goats do not eat gold leaves.”
The next day, when the little tree woke up, it had gold leaves. But a man came , took all the gold leaves and put them into a bag. “Oh!” said the fir-tree. “I wish I had glass leaves. Nobody will want my glass leaves.”
The next day, when the little tree woke up, it had glass leaves. “How happy I am!” it said. See my leaves shine in the sun!”
But suddenly a strong wind began to blow, and broke all the glass leaves.
“Oh!”, said the fir-tree. “I wish I had the needles again. Goats do not eat them. Men do not want them The wind will not break them. The next day it had all its needles again. “Oh, I was never so happy!” said the little fir-tree.
Will you tell me what proverb shows the contest of the story better?
1 .To be in the 7th heaven.
2. To exchange a cuckoo for a hawk.
3. To be in someone’s shoes (skin).
