T: Good morning, boys and girls. I am glad to see you. Children, we have talked a lot about the USA and Great Britain. We have spoken about the political systems in those countries, about big cities, about the population, nature, geography, but it seems to me, we haven’t spoken enough about national holidays and traditions.

At this lesson some of you will tell us about Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, St.Valentine’s Day, about Easter, Mother’s Day, about Independence Day in the USA and other holidays and traditions. Let’s begin with New Year’s Day.

P1: The first of January is New Year’s Day. Many parties are given on this night. The theatres, night clubs and restaurants are crowded. When midnight comes, everyone at the party stops, whatever they have been doing to greet the new year.

The favourite song at the New Year’s Eve party is “ Auld Lang Syne”. It was written by Robert Burns. The merry- makers always sing part of it.

T: On the 14th of February the English and the Americans ctlebrate Saint Valentine’s Day. Will you tell us about this holiday. )

T: You know that the Americans celebrate Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June. Now we’ll hear about these holidays

T :Now we shall speak about a very great holiday, Easter.(Ученики показывают раскрашенные яйца и рассказывают о пасхе.)

T: Now we shall hear about the national holiday in America. It is Independence Day.(Ученики рассказывают о дне независимости.)

T: Many years ago people believed in devils and witches. Children put on masks and went to the streets to beg. It was Halloween Day.(Показывают тыкву со свечой внутри и рассказывают.)

T:And now I’ll read a little story about a national holiday in the United States-Thanksgiving Day.

Pilgrim-1)паломник, 2)странник;

Pilgrim Fathers -английские колонисты, поселившиеся в Америке в1621г.;

Survival- выживание;

Flock-стекаться, собираться;

Prayers- молитвы, просьбы;

Turkey- индейка;

-Is Thanksgiving Day a national holiday in the USA?

-When is this holiday celebrated?

-Who was the first to celebrate this holiday?

-Where do all members of the family gather during this holiday?

-What does the family eat at traditional dinner?

-What do many people do after dinner?

T: Today is the 15th of December. Soon the Americans and the English will celebrate Christmas. Children like to recite the poems.

Christmas time!

The bells are ringing!

We are dancing,

We are singing

Loud and clear

Christmas time is here!

One of you will tell us about this holiday.(Рассказ о Рождестве в Америке и в Англии.)

T: Now let’s sing a traditional Christmas song “Jingle, Bells”.

T: There are special words, connected with this holiday. Please, name them one by one.

A bell, a bunch (пучок, связка, гроздь), blessing ( благословение), Boxing Day, Bethlehem( Вифлеем), Christmas( Eve, cards, decorations, bird, dinner, boxes, Father); a carol (веселая рождественская песня), a candle, cookies, a custom, a chimney( дымоход), a fir-tree, a gift, a holly( остролист), to jingle, a mistletoe-омела, a present, a reindeer-северный олень, a sock, a stocking, a sleigh, Santa Claus.

Answer my questions.

1. When was Jesus Christ born?

2. Where was Jesus Christ born?

T: Thank you. And do you know who decorated the first Christmas tree? Listen to my story and try to understand it.

-No one knows for sure. The custom of bringing an evergreen tree indoors and decorating it at Christmas started in Germany. One legend says that Martin Luther started the practice. Luther was an important Christian leader. According to the story, he noticed the starlit sky as he walked home one Christmas Eve about the year 1513. He thought the stars looked as if they were shining on the branches. When Martin Luther arrived home he placed a small fir-tree inside the house. He decorated it with lighted candles.

Decorating Christmas trees became popular in Germany. Prince Albert took the tradition to England. Both German and English people brought it to America.

T: And now will you tell me in Russian how the tradition of decorating Christmas trees appeared.

T: Thank you very much. And now a new task for you. Read the text “ Christmas” and fill in the missing words. They are given after the text.

Christmas is the happiest -------of the year. It is the-----of the birth of Jesus Christ. Churches hold special------for this joyful occasion. T: Let’ check up this task.

T: Thanks. Do you like riddles? Listen to me and try to guess.

2. There are 12 brothers, who march in a single life, but never overtake one another. /12 months/

4. What year lasts only one day? /The New Year/

5. In winter and in summer they stand both in one colour. /A fir-tree, a pine/

6. What man cannot live inside the house? / A snowman/

T: It’s always very interesting to know what the New Year will be like.

T: Now, please, take any card and tell the fortune to any groupmate you like.

-You will become very rich!

-You will star in a movie and get the Oscar!

-You will spend your summer holidays in Hawaii!

-You will buy a two- storeyed cottage!

-You will have a chance to visit any country you like!

-You will win President’s stipend!

-You will visit Disneyland!

-You will be the best model of the world!

T: Of course, it’s only a dream and a joke. But we must have what our fortune brings us and not to be like a fir-tree in this fairy-tale. Now, please, listen to my story, try to understand it and find an appropriate proverb to this story.

The Little Fir-Tree.

A little fir-tree lived in the forest. It had leaves like long green needles. It was a pretty little tree, but it was not happy. One day it said,”I do not like needles. My needles are hard. The birds will not nest in them. All the other trees have leaves. I wish I had green leaves.

The next day, when the little tree woke up, it had green leaves. It was just like the other trees. “Now I am happy”, it said. But a goat came and ate all the green leaves. “Oh!” said the fir-tree, “I wish I had gold leaves. Goats do not eat gold leaves.”

The next day, when the little tree woke up, it had gold leaves. But a man came , took all the gold leaves and put them into a bag. “Oh!” said the fir-tree. “I wish I had glass leaves. Nobody will want my glass leaves.”

The next day, when the little tree woke up, it had glass leaves. “How happy I am!” it said. See my leaves shine in the sun!”

But suddenly a strong wind began to blow, and broke all the glass leaves.

“Oh!”, said the fir-tree. “I wish I had the needles again. Goats do not eat them. Men do not want them The wind will not break them. The next day it had all its needles again. “Oh, I was never so happy!” said the little fir-tree.

Will you tell me what proverb shows the contest of the story better?

1 .To be in the 7th heaven.

2. To exchange a cuckoo for a hawk.

3. To be in someone’s shoes (skin).

T:You know that many children write letters to Santa Claus and ask him for some presents. Look at this letter and find out mistakes.

Dear Santa!

I’ll be a well boy. I loves my Mom and Dad. Can you to make them happy. They is very kind, but sometimes they am very sad. Can you bringing me a nice litle red car for Christmas?

T: Good of you. Now, a few words about Santa in Russian.

T: Thank you. Now I want youto write down your own letters to Santa Claus and we will put them into this envelope. Write down like this:

A letter to Santa.

I have tried to be very good this year. Would you, please, bring me…

I will leave some milk and cookies for you. Thanks, Santa.

Your friend, Olya.

T: All of us are in high spirit and let’ s finish our lesson with these magic words.” We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” Песня «We wish you a merry Christmas».
