                                                     Art Galleries

The Tate gallery – one of London’s best known art galleries (at Millbank) opened in 1897 with the financial support of sir Henry Tare(1819-1899), a sugar merchant, who also gave a collection of 65 paintings. Most of the National Gallery collections of British paintings were taken to the Tate gallery.  There are about 300 oils and 19,000  watercolours and drawings. There are a lot of paintings by the 16th century English artists there.

It was greatly enlarged later by sir Joseph Duveen and his son lord Duveen of Millbank. The gallery contains a unique collection of British paintings dating from the 16th century to the present day (with Turner and Blake particularly well represented), as well as modern foreign paintings and modern sculpture gallery also regularly holds special exhibition. There are some paintings by impressionist and post – impressionist there. In the Tate gallery one can see many paintings by modern painters, Pablo Picasso among them.

Work of a famous British sculptor can be seen in this gallery. The paintings of this gallery impress everyone, who visits it.
