SEVASTOPOL

1. I live in a hero-city of Sevastopol with the richest history and cultural heritage in spite of its rather young age. It is situated in the southwestern region of the Crimean Peninsular. Located on an inlet of the Black Sea, the city is one of the busiest sea ports and a strategically important naval base of Russian Black Sea Fleet. Today Sevastopol has industrial, scientific, transport, cultural and resort importance for Russia.

Translated from the Greek the name of Sevastopol means “the city of glory, majestic, worthy of veneration”. Founded in 1783, it has since justified its name. Indeed Sevastopol is a symbol of pride and glory for all its generations. The history of the city is very interesting.

Sevastopol has won glory in two legendary sieges becoming a symbol of courage and unprecedented staunchness for the entire world.

Sevastopol earned the admiration of the whole world during the years of the Crimean War (1853 – 1856). The world was amazed by the courage and steadfastness of Sevastopol’s defenders who for 349 days and nights (from September 13, 1854 to August 8, 1855 held the city and showed great heroism.

The names of Admirals Kornilov Vladimir Alexseevich, Nakhimov Pavel Stepanovich, sailor Koshka Petr Markovich, surgeon Pirogov Nikolai Ivanovich, nurse Dasha Sevastopolskaya writer Tolstoy Lev Nikolayevich and many other heroes have been forever written down in the history of the first defense. In the memory of this defense in the city there were erected a lot of remarkable monuments.

The second heroic defense of Sevastopol dates to the years of the Great Patriotic War. The city beat off countless attacks by the enemy for 250 days (from October 29, 1941 to July 3, 1942).

For eight months battles raged day and night. Sevastopol was completely destroyed. Each hour of the long struggle saw the birth of new heroes: pilots Yakov Ivanov and Khrustalyov Nikolai Titovich, sailors Ivan Golubets and Alexander Chikarenko, machine-gunner Nina Onilova, the leader of the underground movement Revyakin Vasili Dmitrievich and thousands of others.

In April 1944 the Soviet Army came to the city. In May 9, 1944 Sevastopol was liberated!

The medal “For the Defense of Sevastopol” was instituted in 1942 to commemorate the courage and heroism of the city’s defenders. Since that time Sevastopol has become the hero-city.

4. Many places of interest remind us of its history. At every turn there is something to catch your eye and take your breath. Sevastopol cannot be imagined without the Monument to the Scuttled Ships, Panorama “The Defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855” on Istorichesky Boulevard. It is the biggest and the most impressive historical museum that is devoted to the Crimean War. I also advise you to visit the Museum of the Defensive Tower on the Malakhov Hill, the Diorama of the Sapun Hill devoted to the liberation of Sevastopol in May 1944, the Black Sea Fleet Museum – the oldest navy museum on the territory of the former USSR, Balaklava – the former British base of the Crimean War period, Inkerman – the cave monastery and fortress of the 8th – 9th century and what not. There are a great many things to see in Sevastopol.

I can’t but mentioned Chersonesus, the reconstructed remnants of the ancient Greek city-colony which was founded in 422BC near the site of modern Sevastopol. A guide will tell you a lot of interesting things about this sight.

There is hardly a park, a square or an open area in the city without a monument or a memorial.

5. There is not much industry in Sevastopol. The Sevastopol Shipyard is engaged in the repair, modernization and re-equipment of naval ships and submarines. Apart from navy-related civil facilities, Sevastopol hosts some other notable industries. An example is Stroitel, one of the leading plastic manufactures. Also, fishprocessing plays a very important role in Sevastopol economy. Several food enterprises produce bakery and diary products, sausage, tinned fish and vegetables and drinks. As for agriculture the main crops are grapes, fruit, vegetables, essential herbs.

Sevastopol enjoys mild winters and moderate warm summers that help make it a popular seaside resort and tourist destination, mainly for visitors from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

6. One could hardly call our city an important cultural centre, yet cultural life in Sevastopol is far from being stale. There are four theatres, some cinemas, libraries and clubs in the city.

7. Sevastopol is compact, occupying approximately 1.080 sq. km.

(compare Moscow – 2510 sq. km.), it is home to more than 412,630 people. There are 97 nationalities and ethnic groups in Sevastopol.

Sevastopolers are proud of their city’s history and beauty. They take care of the old buildings, monuments and parks.

Nowadays Sevastopol is a growing city with new modern buildings, treelined streets and green parks, a city that becomes more and more beautiful. Thousands of cars, buses, minibuses, trolley-buses speed along its wide green streets.

Sevastopol has become one of the greatest and most beautiful cities which is a magnet for artists, painters, musicians, writers and tourists.

It looks different from other cities and towns, it bears unforgettable impressions and definitely well worth a visit.

Appendix 3

Additional information

On March in reaction to the Ukrainian revolution of 2014, people of Sevastopol declared that they wished to join the Russian Federation as a federal subject. The city council supported becoming a part of Russia, and on March 11 it released a joint resolution with the Supreme Council of Crimea to unite as an independent republic between the potential passing of the referendum and union with Russia. Ukrainian authorities strongly criticized referendum decision, considering that building of the Supreme Council of Crimea was controlled by the Russian military when vote on referendum resolution took place.

On March 16, citizens of Sevastopol were included alongside those in the Republic of Crimea in a highly disputed referendum  on March 16, 2014  on leaving Ukraine to join the Russian Federation – with official report of a majority of 96.77% voted to become a part of the Russian Federation. The referendum asked the people of Crimea whether they wanted to join Russia as a federal subject, or if they wanted to restore the 1992 Crimean constitution and Crimea's status as a part of Ukraine. This referendum resulted in the establishment of the short-lived Republic of Crimea, which consisted of both Sevastopol and Crimea.  Russia officially recognized the results of the Crimean referendum.

On March 18, 2014, the treaty on the adoption of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol to Russia was signed between Russia and the Republic of Crimea.
