Lesson plan

Internet Addiction

Class: 7 (Spotlight 7)

T: Good afternoon everybody. How are you today?

Warming up: At the beginning, I’d like you to answer my questions.

  • Have you come to school in time today?

  • Have you taken your mobiles with you today?

  • How long can you live without your mobile phone?

  • Now, will you switch them off and take them away?

Evocation (Стадия вызова):

Now, I want you to describe the picture on the screen. Look for a minute and start.

Picture description

In the picture I can see a boy about fifteen. May be he is sitting in his room, or in the library because we can see a lot of books or dvds in the background. The boy typing something. He is very involved in some process. May be he is searching sth on the Internet or checking his mail. May be he is communicating his friends in the social networks. He is wearing his headphones that’s why he must be away from his real life, in his virtual world.

  • What are we going to discuss, can you guess? (Computer/gadget/ Internet addiction/madness).

  • Which meaning is wider “The Internet” or “a computer”?

  • What gadgets can we use the Internet on? (tablet, laptop, PC)

Realization of meaning

T: Before we start working with the text, I suggest you should work with the table. Write down the information (phrases, word combinations) you already know about Internet addiction in the first column and what you want to find out. You may use the dictionaries on the table. Firstly, do it on your own, then peep into your neighbour’s notes. 3 minutes for you.

Let’s discuss the results. (writing down the ideas on the blackboard)

Internet addiction (addict, to be addicted to the Internet) = online/Net obsession

NEW VOCABULARY.

T: Read aloud some new words after me. (the words in bold in the text)

And now take these texts and while reading fill in the third column “have found out”. 8 minutes for you. Start working on your own and then discuss the results with your partner.

Internet Addiction  (article)

Last week, in a private rehabilitation clinic outside Edinburgh, Leo Edwards, a sixteen-year-old schoolboy, was going through severe withdrawal symptoms. His body often shook violently and uncontrollably, and at mealtimes he regularly threw cups and plates around the dining room. The boy's addiction was not connected with alcohol, drugs, gambling or food. His problem was 'Net obsession'— an over-dependency on the Internet.

An international group of psychologists has found out that anyone who surfs the Internet for long periods is ill and needs medical treatment. According to their report, Internet addicts should be treated as alcoholics, drug addicts, gamblers and people with eating disorders.

Leo Edwards is not an only case. Russell Hopkins, aged fifteen, from Gateshead in north-east England, is a typical online addict.

Every day after school, and after dinner until three or four in the morning, you can find him in his room surfing the Net or playing computer games. By the end of the day he spends more than six hours online. Of course, his parents are extremely worried. Firstly, his school work suffers, but Russell's addiction has also effected his social life and his free-time activities. For example, he has just dropped out of his school's basketball team to spend more time at his computer. Instead of spending a good time out with his friends, he spends it indoors surfing the Internet.

Russell has recently joined an Internet online support group. Dr Ann Hoffman, who has an online support group, says, "People don't realise that spending online for more than four hours a day causes this serious problems, it is especially serious for children and teens as they have weak psychological mentality. I predict that the number of people who join online support groups will have risen dramatically in three years."
