Today you will learn to speak about your hometown. But it is not enough. You should find the ways how to attract more tourists to our town.
And we’ll start with the geographical position of our town and its climate. You have some information in your workbooks. It will help you to answer the following questions. But before you start let’s practice the pronunciation of some words. /слайд 3/
/учащиеся отрабатывают необходимую лексику и работают с текстом, отвечают на вопросы/
Why is our town named Pyatigorsk?
When was it founded?
Why do we call Pyatigorsk a spa resort?
Where is medical mud taken from?
Where is the town situated?
What can people see in the south?
How many sunny days do we have?
When is the first mention of mineral springs found?
The name Pyatigorsk is derived (происходит) from the fused (слившихся) Russian words "пять гор" (five mountains) and the city is so called because of the five peaks of Beshtau.
It was founded in 1780, and has been a health spa with mineral springs since 1803.
Pyatigorsk is one of the oldest spa resorts in Russia. The health resort provides unique medical resources, and its underground wealth (богатство) supplies 50 different mineral springs, medical mud taken from Lake Tambukan.
The town is situated on a small plateau () 512 meters above sea level, at the foot of Beshtau, Mashuk, and three other outliers (обособленная часть) of the Caucasus Mountains, which protect (защищает) it on the north. The snow-covered summits (вершины) of Mount Elbrus are visible to the south.
The climate of Pyatigorsk falls within humid continental and is characterized by absence of sharp fluctuations ( - колебания) of annual and daily temperatures. Summers are warm with the average (средняя) July temperature of
+21 °C
Winters, lasting two-three months, are cold, with the average January temperature of −4 °C
Spring is cool, with a sharp transition (перемена) by the summer, and a warm, dry, and long autumn.
There are an average of ninety-eight sunny days in a year.
The first mention of the mineral springs is found in the writings of the 14th-century Arabian traveler Ibn Battuta.
Scientific interest in them was first shown by Peter the Great, but the information collected on his expedition has since been lost.
Interest was revived (оживился) at the end of the 18th century when the first Russian settlement was founded - Konstantinogorskaya fortress, erected at the foot of the mountain Mashuk in 1780.
The value of the Caucasian mineral waters led to the construction of a resort in 1803, and the first studies of their medical properties began thereafter (впоследствии): on April 24, Alexander I signed a decree which made the mineral waters state property.
There are now many settlements near the springs. The first such settlement was Goryachevodsk (now part of Pyatigorsk) at the bottom of Mt. Mashuk, then Kislovodsk, Yessentuki, Zheleznovodsk.
As we can see, Pyatigorsk is rather old. And it is famous for its climate, nature and of course healing mineral waters. But do people of other countries know anything about our town?
/ответы учащихся/
I asked you this question because I’ve got some letters from different countries. Let’s read them.
Hi,
My name is John Carter. I am from America. I am 45 years old.
I work as a teacher at the University. This year I am going to take part in American-Russian exchange programme. We will visit Pyatigorsk Linguistic University.
But there is one problem. As a matter of fact, I work much and I have to snack just at work. Mostly it’s fast food and coffee. As a result I have digestiveproblems. Unfortunately, many Americans have this illness. And they ask a lot of questions on this problem.
Now I am worried that my illness will prevent me from visiting your city.
Sincerely yours,
John Carter
Who is John Carter
Why is he going to come to Pyatigorsk?

Now, say a few words about Pyatigorsk as a spa resort.
/один учащийся рассказывает о Пятигорске как о курорте/
Now, let’s read the second letter.
Hi,
We are students from Great Britain. We study literature. At our last lesson we were given the task to write a project on Russian poets. We have information that the life of the famous Russian poet Lermontov is connected with your town. Is it really so?
We would be grateful if you help us with our research. We need some historical facts about this part of his life in the Caucasus.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Kate and Linda
Let’s make a collage on Lermontov’s places of Pyatigorsk.
Of course, there are a lot of places connected with Lermontov but we have no time to describe every place. I have some pictures but I forgot about the texts. They are in your workbooks. Look at the pictures. Look through your texts. If you have the text about this place, raise your hand.
Don’t forget to name the place
Modest, clean whitewashed house under a thatched roof located at the foot of mountain Mashuk. There are four rooms in the house. The decor is modest and exactly the same that was here during the life of the poet.
In the rock the cave was accidentally discovered. Now it is one of the charming places in the area. The track leads to the cool and shaded cave From this place you can overlook the surroundings. Here according to Lermontov two characters from the novel “The hero of our time” Pechorin and Vera met.
This is a symbol of Pyatigorsk. Its meaning is obvious. The eagle is a strong bird, “the king of the mountains” representing the healthy power of Caucasus. The snake is the most disgusting reptile that is an allegory of diseases. The victory of the Eagle over the Snake is the symbol of the healing power of mineral waters of the Caucasus.
It is a natural cave on the slope of mount Mashuk. Is a conical funnel diameter of 15 and a height of 41 meters, and at the bottom of the crater there is a lake. The colour is infused in water contained sulfur and special bacteria. The water temperature is from plus 26 to 42 degrees, the depth of the lake is 11 meters.
It was created by architects Bernardazzi in the XIX century. It is a round summerhouse with columns. A wooden box with two harps was fixed in the stone floor. The vane turning in the wind operated the string device. The melodious sounds can be heard
This monument was built in the centre of Pyatigorsk. It was opened in 1889. Funds for the construction of this monument have been collected by subscription for over 10 years. Lermontov is depicted sitting, staring at the chain of the Caucasus Mountains. At the feet - an open book.
This gallery got its name by name of mineral water source opened in 1811. "I will go to Elisabeth source – can we read in Lermontov's novel" Princess Mary "- there, they say, in the morning all the water society gets together.
In 1925 it was renamed into Academic Gallery. From a platform in front of the gallery a beautiful view of Pyatigorsk and its surroundings can be observed.
This building is well known because of the fact that Lermontov was treated here. During one of his visits to the Caucasus the poet wrote to his friend: "Having caught the common cold, I came to the water all in rheumatism , I was taken from the wagon, I could not walk - in a month I was completely recovered by the water ..."
This artificial cave was constructed under the project of brothers Bernardazzi in 1829. to commemorate the first ascent of Mount Elbrus under the leadership of General Emanuel. At the entrance of the grotto there were two iron boards with texts (in Russian and Arabic) on this ascent. Mikhail Lermontov was a frequent visitor to the Grotto of Diana. A week before the tragic death of a poet in a duel was the organizer of the ball in this grotto, which is left a lot of fun memories of participants.
The duel took place in the evening of July 15, 1841 Lermontov considered a reason for the duel insignificant and expressed his reluctance to shoot. But the enemy was aiming carefully.
Now, we have a completed album that we can send to Kate and Linda
Now, it’s time to read the last letter.
Hi there,
My name is Mike. I live in Sidney, Australia. I am a pupil. I have many friends here and abroad. We like doing a lot of things together – listening to music, dancing, playing computer games. My city is big and beautiful. We often go on different excursions with my class.
Besides, I often travel with my parents. Last year we visited Switzerland. I tried skiing there and I liked it very much. And this summer they are planning to visit some places in Russia. Pyatigorsk is one of them. I don’t want to go with them. I know that Pyatigorsk is a very small town and I think I will feel bored. Can you tell me how young people spend their time in Pyatigorsk.
Yours,
Mike
I think you can help Mike if you tell him about your life and activities
I think that the words and expressions in your workbooks will help you to give as much information as possible about the life of the young generation of Pyatigorsk
