Диалог

  • Do you know why the American Civil War began?
  • As far as I remember it began because there were differences between the North and the  South
  • I agree with you. The northerners were more powerful. They built factories and plants, which produced not only goods but weapons.
  • As for the southerners, they didn’t have developed industry. They grew crops in the fields where slaves worked day and night. And they didn’t want to change their life.
  • Who wanted to abolish slavery?
  • You won’t believe but the Northerners. They were strongly against the slavery.  They even tried to pass a new law to abolish the slavery.
  • I suppose that the rich Southerners didn’t like this idea and started to think of breaking away From the United States.
  • In my opinion Abraham Lincoln was the president of the United States when the Civil War began
  • You are right. In his inaugural speech (address) he warned the Southerners that they shouldn’t destroy the Union of the states.
  • But the southerners didn’t listen and in February 1861 eleven Southern states formed their own union called Confederacy.
  • It is a pity but the  northern states and the southern states fought against each other. And who was the winner in the war I wonder?
  • The Southerners lost the battle in Gettysburg in June 1863. But I think both the South and the North were winners.
  • Why do you think so?
  • I think so, because slavery was abolished in the South, it was not separated  from the north and the USA was one country again.

  • His foreign policy was to keep out of quarrels abroad. He was the president during 8 years.
  • He refused to run for a third term. In 1797 he retired to Mount Vernon, where he died on December 14, 1799. The name of the city was given in his honor.

T: Thank you very much for your work and enthusiasm. Most of you were at the top of the class. Some of you were rather quiet today. You are to be more active at the lesson. You can’t learn to speak English by sitting and listening to the other pupils. Forget about being shy and nervous. It’s far better to make a few mistakes than to say nothing. Your marks today are….

Thank you for cooperation.
