I. Начало урока.
I think we can start our lesson. You are ready to join us, aren t you? Our lesson
is devoted to the memory of William Shakespeare, the greatest English poet and dramatist.
Shakespeare `s Birthday Celebrations are annually held in England. They will celebrate the 450th anniversary of his birthday todау (April 23).
The season of Shakespeare` s plays usually begins in April and ends in November.
Now open your heart to music and verse. I suppose you will enjoy listening to one of Shakespeare`s sonnets. It s number 90 (Music and singing by S.Nikitin).
Very nice.
Let` s remember some facts of his biography. Some of the pupils will tell us about his childhood, his family and his literary work.
I ask you to be very attentive and ready to answer some questions (after their stories).
II.
W. Shakespeare was born on the 23 of April, 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon. His father, John Shakespeare, was a merchant. His mother, Mary Arden, was a father’s daughter. John and Mary had 8 children. William was their third child. He was a boy of a free and open nature. He learned to read and write at the Grammar school in Stratford. On leaving school he began to learn foreign languages. He taught Latin, Greek and Italian. He was a boy, when he began to produce plays. At the age of 18 he married the girl, Anne Hathaway. They had 3 children.
At the age of twenty-one W. Shakespeare went to London. London had many playhouses. He joined the company of actors called «The Lord Chamberlain’s Men». First he became an actor, then he began to write plays. They often performed before the queen Elizabeth. She was fond of Shakespeare’s plays. W. Shakespeare was a good actor, himself, bud he did not play the principle roles. First «The Lord Chamberlain’s Company» had no theatre of their own. When the playhouse was built, it was called «The Globe». «The Globe» was a summer theatre situated on the bank of the Thames. The building was round. The galleries and the stage had a roof over them, but the pit was open to the sky. There were two doors. A sing of Hercules with the globe on his shoulders was displayed in front of the main door. The Latin words were written there: «All the world is a stage». A flying flag was there on the top of the theatre during the performance. Performances always began at three o’clock in the afternoon and lasted for three hours. The stage had three floors. At the end of the performance clowns appeared and enjoy the spectators. W. Shakespeare lived in London for 25 years. His best years were devoted to the theatre. The last few years of his life he spent in Stratford. He died on the 23d of April, 1616 at the age of 52. He was buried in Stratford church.
Four lines are inscribed on it and are side to have been written by himself :
«Good friend, for Jesus sake, forbear
To big the dust enclosed here;
Blessed be he that spares there stones,
And cursed be he that moves my bones».
Will you answer the following questions?
P.1: What was Shakespeare’s father?
P.2: How many children were there in their family?
P.3: When did he go to London?
P.4: Who was fond of his plays?
P.5: What was the name of the theatre where he began to work?
P.6: Where and when did he die?
III.T (учитель): Very nice. Before speaking about W. Shakespeare’s literary work let’s remember the words describing his creative work:
(учащиеся повторяют хором за учителем лексику, а потом выборочно переводят наиболее трудные слова).
characters language ideas sonnets
merry vivid love fashionable
loving emotional friendship criticize
happy witty humanism expressing
real rich freedom feelings of love
ordinary brilliant national unity
bright the relations beauty
unusual full of of man to man
intellects metaphors
T (учитель): That will do. Shakespeare’s literary work is usually divided into three periods:
the optimistic period (1590-1600),
the pessimistic period (1601-1609) and
the romantic period (1609-1612)
P.1: His best comedies belong to the first period. They are the plays «Henry VI», «Henry V», «Henry IV», «Richard II», «Richard III», «The comedy of Errors», «Much ado about nothing», «A midsummer night’s dream», and others. They aver 22 plays all in all. His poems are also attributed to the first period. They are «Venus and Adonis», and «Lucrece» and 154 sonnets.
T(учитель): Will you listen to one of them. It’s sonnet 116 (учитель читает на английском языке, а ученица – в переводе, на русском языке).
William Shakespeare, Sonnet 116.
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alternation finds,
Or, bends with the remover to remove :
O, not it is an ever fixed mark
That looks on tempests, and is never shaken;
It is star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s Fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with brief hours and weeks
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this de error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
P.2: The second period of Shakespeare’s literary work is famous for his tragedies. They are «Hamlet», «Othello», «King Lear», «Macbeth», «Timon of Atheus», and others.
In his tragedies Shakespeare shows great human problems, the social injustice. Something must be done to change he world. He believed in a better future for all people. The ideas of freedom and happiness for all people have maid him the greatest humanist of the world.
P.3: Shakespeare’s plays of the third period are called the Romantic Dramas. He transports us to a world of fantasy and allegory. The plays of the third periods are : «Cymbeline», «The Winter Tale», «The Tempest», «Henry VIII».
T(учитель): Let’s make some kind of conclusion. William Shakespeare is so a great writer, that every generation finds new ideas in his works. His plays do not grow old with time. They are translated into hundreds of languages of the world. His famous comedies are still staged in many famous theatres of Europe and America, Africa and Australia and Asia. Films, ballets, operas are made after his works. His ideas of love, friendship, humanism, patriotism, freedom, and national unity are still very popular.
We admire his vivid, witty and brilliant language, it’s full of metaphors. Many common phrases from his plays have become part of the everyday language of the English people and other people, too. Many phrases from his plays become famous quotations.
IV. Now let’s have a competition between the two teams: «The Globe» and «The Swan» (за правильные ответы по всем видам заданий учащиеся получают жетоны).
Who is the best in knowing Shakespeare’s quotations?

To be, or not to be, that is the question.
