T: Dear collegues! We’re immensely glad to see you at our school. Have you ever thought about what makes people happy? You can suggest various reasons. People’s communication is one of them. No need to say that we live in the world of high technologies, space exploration and wide use of the Internet. We can easily get in touch with our friends over mobiles or keep the correspondence over the Internet but the luck of people’s communication and friendship has still remained . Our town is often visited by many tourists. They are much interested in Russian history, old towns , traditions and customs of Russian people. When we receive a foreigner we should know what attracts him/her best in our country, how to do the city and make it pleasant, how to organize his/her stay at the hotel and even to book the airplane tickets. All these questions forced us to act out a role play “Meet my foreign friend” as we think that only a role play can involve every student into acting .We hope our idea will be interesting and useful.
F.Fr. Hallo! Nice to meet all of you! I’m … from … . It’s my first visit to Vladimir. I’m keen on travelling, as many British teens are, and making new friends. I’m fascinated by the Russian history and culture .I’ve heard much about the old towns of the Golden Ring of Russia and now I’d like to visit some of them see everything with my own eyes. As the proverb says: “Seeing is believing”. Can you give me some advice how to start my travelling best?
P1. Hi! My name is … . To my mind the best way to see a strange city is to buy a guide-book or a map. If you like to know more, it’s useful to walk along the streets and look around the historical places, buildings and monuments. No doubt you would visit galleries, museums, besides you may ask a resident of the town to advise you what sights to see first. What have you already seen in Vladimir?
F.Fr. Oh, I haven’t been anywhere as yet. Could you show me around the town a bit and give some information about the most famous sights of your town? What shall we start with?

P2. I’m …. I can help you a bit. I think the best starting point of the city tour in Vladimir is Cathedral Square, the central square of the town, the place of meetings, demonstrations, concerts and festivals. In the center of it you can see a monument to 850 th anniversary of Vladimir. Vladimir is rather ancient town. It is 1016 years old. We who live in the XXI century enjoy the honour and the duty to feel ourselves the heirs to this multi - century tradition. Vladimir is one of the centers of domestic and international tourism. It is included into the programme of the “Golden Ring of Russia”. Vladimir was founded by the Prince Vladimir the Red Sun (показ ) as a small fortress on the bank of Klyazma river in 992. It was built like Kiev on seven hills.
P3. I’ve got something to add. In average centuries Vladimir developed quickly. Its geographical place was very comfortable. That’s why Vladimir has become the biggest town of Vladimir – Suzdalian principality and the capital of all Russ. That time there was the school of white stone architecture, even nowadays, we can see a lot of monuments of its art.
( показкадраУспенскогособора)
At first it is St. Assumption cathedral. It was built by Andrey the God Beloved in 1152. There you can find the frescoes of great Vladimir artist – Andrey Rublev the wonder – working icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir is kept in the cathedral (показ иконы).
F.Fr. My! What a wonderful icon! It’s just a miracle!
( показ кадра Дмитриевского собора)
P4. Now, we are making our way to another great historical monument – St.Demetrius cathedral. It’s not far from here. The cathedral is famous for its carvings on the walls. There one can find a lot of heroes from the Bible. The cathedral was built as a home church of the Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest, the time of “the Lay of Igor’s Host”.

P5. Well, we’re going along Bolshaya Moskovskaya street and passing Vladimir Town Shops and a number of corner shops situated here (показ).Just in front of you there is the symbol of Vladimir – the Golden Gates.(показ кадра Золотые ворота). It was built as a fortress by the Prince the God Beloved in 1164.Today it is a museum of heroic history of Vladimir Land.

Besides, the guests of our town will be greatly impressed by visiting well-known Vladimir-Suzdal Museum – Preserve, the church of Archangel Michael on the Frosty Hill ( “Clocks and Time”), the Trinity church(Museum of crystal and lacquered miniature), the Nikitskaya church and others. All of them are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
P6. I can’t but agree with the fact that Vladimir is mostly famous for its historical past. Modern Vladimir is worth seeing either. If you don’t mind, I will show you around the present –day Vladimir. It is the administrative, industrial, educational and cultural center of the Vladimir region.
(показкадровсовременногоВладимира)
Today the town has two universities, the institute of law, some colleges, children’s musical and sports schools. Vladimir can boast such cultural facilities as: two theatres, a concert hall, a picture gallery, movie houses, Youth Centers, libraries, stadiums, swimming pools and parks.
F.Fr. Oh, everything was so interesting and exciting that time passed quickly. On the 2nd day of my journey I’ll surely make a trip of Suzdal. How long will it take me to get there?
P7. Why it’s quite easy! Suzdal is situated in about 24 km from Vladimir. We can get there by a coach or by car. It will take you half an hour there. While travelling you can take pictures of everything that interests you: the sights of a city, valleys, plains old churches and later the photos will remind you of the happy time you have had during the trip.
F.Fr. Yes, I’ve got a camera with me, but I’m afraid something had happened to it during the flight. Now my camera needs to be repaired.Damit!
P8. Can I have your camera for a moment? (осматривает фотоаппарат) Nothing serious.
F.Fr. You’re kidding!
P8. Nothing of the kind. It’s because the batteries are out of order. You just need the new ones . No fear! we’ll buy them tomorrow, if not, I’ll give you mine.
F.Fr. Thank you a lot. It’s very kind of you. It’s truly said there is nothing like having friends you can rely on them.

P9. Our journey will take us through the historic, now heritage-protected center of Suzdal. The first mention of Suzdal dates to the year 1024. It was created by Prince Vladimir Monomach. In 1967 Suzdal was decided to turn into a tourist center. It has become a museum-town of ancient Russian Art and architecture. The main historical buildings are situated by the Kamenka river:

Pokrovsky Convent of the 16-17 centuries, the Nativity Cathedral. Beyond the Kamenka river there is a preserve with ancient wooden buildings (показ кадра реки Каменка). They comprise a Russian village with the unique wooden churches and houses. In 1983 by the decision of the Journalist International Federation, Suzdal was awarded the highest prize “ The Golden Apple” as a museum-town and a tourist centre.
F.Fr. A jolly idea has come to my mind. What if we stay in Suzdal for more than one day? Are there any hotels to stay there for a night or so?
(показ кадра Туристического комплекса в Суздале)
P10. I’m the manager of the hotel “Central Tourist Complex” in Suzdal. When people come to Suzdal they almost always stay at our hotel as it has been planned to make your stay in the town as pleasant as possible. Our hotel is modern and well-equipped. We have single rooms and double rooms. They are comfortable and clean. There is a private bathroom, a TV set and a fridge in each room. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are downstairs but our visitors can also order meals by phone. There are coffee-bars, a sauna with a pool. The hotel has some facilities: a barber’s, a post-office, a dry-cleaner’s, a shop and a laundry. Our hotel has a hall for congress and business meetings. But mind, let the hotel receptionist know in advance the day and the time of your arrival.
F.Fr. I sure will. One of my American friend was here with his friend last winter. They celebrated Christmas at the hotel and they loved a lot.
( показ кадра «Русские Праздники»)
P11 . You’re right. “Central Tourist Complex” in Suzdal can offer you a lovely programme of entertainments. People from all parts of the world come here to admire “Festival of Russian fairy tales” and “Geese Fights” in February. In March you can take part in celebration of “Russian Shrovetide” with eating pancakes, singing and dancing Russian folk songs. The “Trinity” holiday of folk handicrafts will warmly meet you in June. In the middle of June a tasty festival of “Suzdalian Cucumber” is held here. And of course, in July if you wish, the hotel makes trips to Murom to celebrate the holiday of Sts. Peter and Phevronia. From this year it has become an official holiday of love and family. I think it will be great and you’ll admire the every moment of your trip.
P12. No wonder holiays and festivals are the eternal part of Russian culture but out land is also famous for its talented writers, scientists, musicians, poets and artists. I’d like to invite you to make a literary tour around Vladimir land. (показ кадра «Знаменитости Владимирской земли). Who doesn’t know A.I. Odoevsky a great writer, he was born not far from Yuri Polsky. The next famous Russian writer whose name is connected with our land is K. Balmont. He is known as one of the best poets of the “silver age”.
(показ кадра Фестиваль Фатьяновской песни)
P13. The names of popular Russian poets like R.Rogdestvensky and A. Phatianov are connected with our native land too. Their poems became songs. Every year in Vyazniky not far from Vladimir is held a festival devoted to A.Phatianov lovers of his poems come here to recite poems and to listen to his songs. It would be difficult to mention all famous compatriots who served Vladimir land and Russia – the Taneyev brothers, the Stoletov brothers , A. Herzen, I.S. Shmelyov, S. Nikitin and many, many others.
P14. We are proud to be the citizens of our great and beautiful country and I’d like to prove it by reciting the poem.
“Oh, Russia. I’m in love with you”
Remember, Russia, you are great
Not in the field of battle past
But in the green fields full of wheat
And forests , gardens, free of dust.
I love you deeply, dear land.
Your hills and rivers sand on strand
Your songs and dances, lakes and sear
Your beasts and fish, birds in trees
Your sunrise in a splendid sight
Which gives me always such delight!
F.Fr. Well, the impression of our journey is just fantastic ! You speak about your native land with great love and high sense of patriotism . I think people
What a pity! I’m leaving you in a couple of days. I’ll have to make a call to the Travel Agency and to book the ticket in advance.
