Before you begin

This section continues the topic of the mountains, first in the context of mountain sports activities. You could begin by asking the children what sports they can do where they live.

PUPIL’S BOOK pages 20 and 21

  1. This is Jenny. She likes sports. Where can you do these things?

Read though the sentences with the children and ask for suggestions about where they can do each activity.

EXTRA IDEA  You could mine each action and the children can say what is it.

  1. David, Fiona and Mike like sports, too. Say what they do.

The children need to follow the lines from each person to find  out what sports they do.  They can do this in pairs. As you go through the answers, ask for one activity for each person, so that you have a natural context for the 3rd person present simple. The children could then write some sentences about one of the people.

  1. Think. Look at the picture of  an avalanche in the Exercise 4. Are these sentences true or false? Compare answer with a  friend.

Look at the picture of the avalanche  briefly with the children and then ask them to close their books. You can then write the five sentences on the board. In pairs, the children decide if the sentences are true or false and why. You could then discuss their ideas with them before they read the text in Exercise 4.

  1. Read about avalanches . Check your answers to Exercise 3.

To check their answers, the children can now read the text silently or you can read the text aloud to them. Ask Why? for each answer.

EXTRA IDEA You could give the children copies of the text cut up into complete sentences. The children can then try to put the text together.

  1. Listen. Can you find three differences in the text in Exercise 4?

You could first ask the children to listen with their books closed, to see if they can remember the details of the printed text.

Audioscript

  1. These are the animals on Sally’s farm. Match the words and the pictures.

Children draw a line matching the words to the  correct pictures.

  1. What’s Sally got on her farm? Look, count and write.

Before you ask the children to do this exercise, you could revise the spelling of numbers up to twenty.

  1. My friend, Jelly, does lots of things in the mountains. What does she do with these things? Match the pictures and the sentences.

Children read the sentences and match them to the pictures.
