When tears are in your eyes
It’s time to look inside
Your heart can find another way
Believe in what I say
Don’t throw this time away
Tomorrow will be Christmas Day
So let the shadows go
And drift away like snow
Tomorrow will be Christmas Day
Tomorrow will be Christmas Day
So dream until the night,
Becomes the morning light
Tomorrow will be Christmas Day
Tomorrow will be Christmas Day.

T. The topic of our lesson is “How people celebrate Christmas in different countries?” I asked you to find out some interesting information about it in the Internet. Now, imagine that you are a representative of a certain country and you are supposed to be interviewed by a journalist of a well-known English channel about the traditions and customs connected with Christmas celebrations.
Today in the studio we have two experienced journalists from BBC1 channel. Get ready to answer their questions.
So, the first guest we are going to meet is from Russia. Please come and take a seat.
- Good morning, Mr. Petrov. Our first question will be about Christmas dishes in Russia. Are they special?
- The main event in Christmas is a supper on Sochelnyk.
On the eve of Christmas our ancestors basically put on a table a bunch of fresh hay, in memory of the place, in which Jesus was born. A table itself was covered with a snow-white cloth. There were 12 dishes on the table according to the number of the apostles. All the dishes were without any meat. Among these dishes were fish, borsch, vareniki, cabbage, pies and others. Later people started to eat meat on Christmas.
- What do people in Russia usually do during a Christmas week?
- the first day of Christmas holidays there are no visitors except close relatives. People in Russia used to say that they bring "supper to the grandfather". On the other days after Christmas before the Christening - Svyatki - it is preferable to take care of the poor: to visit children`s houses, shelters, hospitals, prisons. Many years ago in Svyatki even the kings dressed as the poor people, visited prisons and gave prisoners presents and all the necessary things.
- are also a lot of guessing, telling fortunes and magical signs.
- - What can you tell us about singing kolyadki?
- special tradition of Christmas and Svyatki in Russia is kolyadki.. Young people and children used to dress up and go about neighbourhood with a large self-made star, singing church songs, and also spiritual songs-kolyadki devoted to Christmas. The custom for singing kolydki is spread everywhere, but in different areas of the country, had different features.
- some areas of Russia a star is replaced with a"vertep", that is an original doll theatre, in which the scene of Jesus birth is represented.
- - Thank you, Mr. Petrov. You story was very informative.
- Our next guest is from an exotic country where Christmas is also celebrated no matter that they have summer on Christmas. Guess what country he is from? From Australia, of course. So, meet Mr. Scube from Sydney. Mr. Scube, what is the most extraordinary tradition of celebrating Christmas in Australia?
Well, first of all, we generally celebrate it on the beach. And the best Christmas present is considered to be a beach towel.
- Do you have any Christmas decorations? Do you have a Christmas tree?
Yeah, there is a tradition to hang a Christmas wreath on the front door. It means that people living behind the door are very peaceful and friendly. As for Christmas tree, some people decorate artificial trees at home and some of them just do it to entertain their pets.
- What other unique features of Christmas celebrations in Australia can you tell us about?
The most unexpected Christmas food, of course. It is seafood and fruit. The most unusual Santa transport. It is no wonder a surfboard. And Christmas fireworks. They are the most magnificent in the world.
- Thank you, Mr. Scube. And we are going to meet Miss Ponayotis from Greece. Could you tell us, Miss Ponayotis, if fir tree considered to be a Christmas tree in Greece?
Actually, we use an olive tree as a Christmas tree in Greece. We call it “Christoksilo”.
- Are there any special traditions on Christmas in Greece?
Yes, one of them is called “sartes”. A month before Christmas young people gather together and learn “kolyadki”. After Christmas performances they compete in the number of sweets and treats they have got on Christmas.
Another widespread tradition is cleaning the fireplace. The point is that every fireplace should be cleaned of the last year ash.
The next custom is that the host of the family should make a fire in the fireplace using the logs of the Christmas tree. According to the legend, while the tree is being burnt, it is warm in the Bethlehem’s cave.
- What is the traditional Christmas dish in Greece?
Well, nearly in every family we have a roasted pork with potatoes or a turkey in wine. As a dessert we usually have traditional Christmas cookies with honey. But the most important dish on Christmas is “Vasilapita”. It’s a sort of pie with nuts and blackcurrant. We put one euro into it. The one who gets it will be happy all the year.
