Forgotten Hero of the Great Patriotic War

(Nikolai Vasilyevich Shapkin (10.03.1923-1945))

Born on March 10, 1923 in the village of Red Desert now Sergach district of Nizhny Novgorod region in the family farmer. Russian.

Nicholai graduated from Shakhty secondary school № 30. He was fond of aviation, days lost at the local flying club. Shakhty Aeroclub at that time led the future Hero of the Soviet Union Alexander K. Horowitz, has raised a lot of cool professionals who have covered themselves with unfading glory in the Great Patriotic War.

Finished school, Nicholas entered the Yeisk Naval Aviation School, where he found his war. Life is divided into two parts: before the war and during the war.

On June 31, 1941 - the Red Army. After graduation, in 1943, he was sent to the Leningrad front in the 15th Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment of the 43rd Air Squadron 15th Intelligence Tallinn Red Banner Order of Ushakov II degree Aviation Regiment (Air Baltic Fleet).

The first successful flight took place on July 25th, 1943. All combat pilot took place in the way the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet. He took part in the Leningrad-Novgorod, Vyborg, the Baltic and East Prussian offensive operations. He flew aircraft "Yak-1", "Yak-7", "Yak-9."

By May 1944 Shapkin made 120 successful combat missions for the exploration of naval bases and marine communications enemy.

For exemplary performance of command assignments at the front of the struggle against German fascism and for displaying courage and heroism, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on July 22, 1944 Lieutenant Shapkina Nikolai Vasilyevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union and the Order of Lenin and medal "Gold Star" ( number 4009).

After receiving the highest award of the Motherland NV Shapkin continued to fight with the enemy.
