2. What feast is important for the whole country?
3. What unusual festival is connected with lifting weights?
4. What is the Cheese Rolling Ceremony?
5. What tradition of eating together is popular in the village of Randwick?
6. Where do people celebrate a feast in memory of the past events?
A. A woolsack race is one of the British local festivals that could be called strange. It started in Tetbury, a wool town, in the 17th century when young men wanted to demonstrate their physical strength. Since then, every spring men and women compete in teams to carry heavy woolsacks up and down the hill. The race events are complemented by a funfair and musical entertainments.
B. Midsummer is the time for the Cheese Rolling Ceremony in many places. Competitors gather at the top of a hill. The Master of the Ceremonies lets a heavy head of cheese roll down the hill. Brave runners race down to be the first to catch it. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled in 2010 due to safety issues.
C. The village of Marshfield, England, is famous for its Paperboys procession. People dressed in paper costumes go through the streets. They start from the market place and perform the town’s unique character play along the road. By noon they have done more than six performances for several hundred people.
D. Every January Up Helly Aa is celebrated in Scotland. People dressed in Viking costumes and helmets go through the streets of Lerwick. They hold flaming torches, sticks with special material on the top which burns in order to give light. The strongest participants carry a full size model of a Viking ship to an open field. There the people throw lit torches into the ship and burn it.
E. Melbourne Cup Day is held in Australia, in November. Although Cup Day is a public holiday only in the city of Melbourne, the rest of the country refuses to be left out of the event. People gather around televisions and computers, whether at work, at home, or wherever they are, just to watch this world famous horse race. This event is often called ‘the race that stops the nation’.

КОНТРОЛЬНАЯ РАБОТА №1 «ОБЫЧАИ И ТРАДИЦИИ. ОБРАЗ ЖИЗНИ»
Перепиши аккуратно текст в тетрадь.
In Scotland, the New Year's Eve celebration is called Hogmanay which means `new morning' in Celtic. It is surely the most exciting celebration of the year.
Preparations for the celebrations start early on December 31st. People clean their houses and throw out old unwanted things. They also bake special shortbread biscuits and a rich fruit cake called 'Black Bun', to share with family and friends on the big day.
On the night of Hogmanay there are live concerts and fabulous carnivals in the streets of all Scottish towns. A lot of excited people get dressed up in colourful costumes. In some cities there is also a long torchlight procession through the streets that crowds watch excitedly. As soon as the bells chime twelve, everyone kisses and heartily wishes each other a Happy New Year.

1. How can people use their digital personal assistants?
2. What kind of mobiles is ideal for a grandma?
3. What kind of strange competition started in Finland in 2000?
4. How can people get back to real-life communication?
5. What is a law against mobiles?
6. How can people recognize phone addiction?
A. Young people often worry about the style and functions of mobile phones. However, today companies present more models for people who are over 50 or 60 years old. They need a mobile phone with large buttons, so that they can dial numbers without glasses. The menu is also simple. It really doesn't matter if the phone has a camera or the Internet. For them, less is more.
B. Today, when friends meet in a cafe, they put their mobile phones in the middle of the table. They aren't allowed to touch them at all. If someone does it and answers the phone, they have to pay for everybody. Sounds fun, right? The idea is to make people concentrate on a real conversation with each other instead of using their mobiles all the time.
C. Visitors of theatres and cinemas often complain that mobile phones ring during performances. The city government of New York passed a new act. It is now forbidden to use mobile phones in places, like theaters, libraries, museums, galleries, and cinemas. Those who don't switch off their mobiles will have to pay $50.
D. With mobile phones we can contact anyone, anywhere, any time. Scientists say that some people are so used to mobiles that they can't go to the kitchen without them. They are in panic if they leave them at home or lose. It has become a habit to have a mobile everywhere. People depend on mobile phones so much that doctors have started worrying. They say it may be a thing similar to drugs
Е. Today's mobile phones can already send e-mails, surf the Internet, and keep you in touch with friends. Tomorrow's phones are like helpful secretaries. In a few years you'll see that they know your habits and can advise you what to cook for dinner. They will remind you where to go and what present to buy.

No one really knows how many millions of species of wildlife exist on Earth, but one thing is for sure, plants and animals are all around us! Some live in the woodlands, rivers, hedgerows and ponds in and around our neighbourhoods. Others live in our school playgrounds, private gardens or even in the tiny spaces between grains of sand!
Unfortunately, as towns and cities get bigger, humans are destroying these habitats. To build more houses and roads they are cutting down trees in woodlands and forests, which are home to animals such as foxes, otters, red squirrels and hedgehogs and beautiful plants.

You can travel almost anywhere in the world, and you will probably see graffiti. Although graffiti is more common in big cities, today you may find it in almost any region or district, big or small. It's everywhere: on trains, walls, bridges and buildings. Love it or hate it but graffiti is part of the everyday urban world. Some people consider it art while others think it's vandalism. However, few of them really know how old graffiti is.
The word graffiti itself probably comes from the old Greek verb which means “to write”. Writings on walls already existed in ancient Rome. The Romans cut graffiti on walls and monuments. What was it like, you may ask? Ancient graffiti was absolutely different from today's. It showed phrases of love, political ideas, simple thoughts, magic spells, alphabets, and famous quotations from literature.
Modern graffiti dates back to the US of the 1960s. At that time for young people it was a form of self-expression and a political protest. Teenage groups in New York, for example, painted graffiti to mark their territory. Later, there started competitions between different groups. That meant that the quality of graffiti became more important than just the amount of it.
Today graffiti has travelled all over the world. However, it is still an illegal art. It has been always painted on private or public property, like cars, trains, fences and house walls. As a result, most people see it as vandalism. Besides, it's rather hard to clean graffiti paints, and cities spend millions every year on it. So, in most countries graffiti is forbidden.
Probably, the most famous graffiti artist is Banksy, who comes from Bristol, England. He strongly believes that writing graffiti on buildings is an effective way to communicate with people. His works are very often aggressive, provocative and even rude. In his graffiti he expresses personal political and social views, which are against war and capitalism.
Banksy is known not only for his graffiti works. He also likes playing “jokes”. He sometimes unofficially hangs his works in the main art galleries. He doesn't want to be paid for them because he's sure art should be free. He says he wants to see how long it will take people to notice it. Once Banksy went into the Tate Gallery dressed as an old man, and glued a picture to the museum wall in protest of the Iraq War.
1 Graffiti appeared only in the 20th century.

Three friends were chatting excitedly as they were driving down to the south coast of England for their camping holiday. It was getting dark, so Danny suggested that they find somewhere to stay for the night. Almost immediately, Mark spotted a small inn by the side of the road.
When they went in, they saw a young policeman talking in the lounge with some people. What was strange was that the people were wearing very old-fashioned clothes! Tom took a few photos and they stayed the night. The next morning, they paid the bill, which seemed extremely cheap, and then they left.
A week later, the friends decided to stay at the inn again on their way home.

Hi Susan!
I bet you can't wait to go on holiday! Don't worry about which book to take because I've just
read a brilliant fantasy thriller set in Ireland. It's called Artemis Fowl and it's by my favourite author, Eoin Colfer.
Let me tell you a bit about the book. Basically, it's a fairy tale for our times. It's about a fairy police officer called Captain Holly Short who is kidnapped by the twelve-year-old evil genius. Artemis Fowl. He wants the fairies to pay a lot of gold to get her back.
Unfortunately for Artemis, Holly Short is a member of the fairy secret police and her senior officer will do anything to rescue her.
So, as you can imagine, the plot is very exciting and fast-paced and it is very funny, too. See you.

So, as you can imagine, the plot is very exciting and fast-paced and it is very funny, too. See you.
