Exploration for Oil

Providing growing demands of industry and people with energy sources has become extremely important lately. One of the main sources is oil. Exploration and oil output is carried out by all countries whose territories have oil supplies. Outpu of oil deposits from sea bed is considered to be very perspective nowadays.

Exploration for oil around the Scottish shores has become a very big industry. This is an account of how oil is extracted from beneath the North Sea.

To get the oil out, four production platforms will be used: huge structures, three made of concrete and one of steel, designed to work for 25 years or more. Instead of floating, they are planted firmly on the sea bed and designed to stand up to the worst of sea and weather. From each platform a series of holes is drilled, some going almost straight down, others drilled at some angle away from the platform so that a large volume of oil can be extracted. The oil doesn't lie there like a great swimming pool full of black liquid, it is trapped in small spaces between the porous rocks. To get as much as possible out many separate holes have to be drilled.

Each platform has accommodation fo 90 people. The life is tough, the work hard and difficult, and the hours long. No alcohol is allowed on the platforms but the food is good and there is plenty of it, a necessity for men who work hard all day in cold wet conditions. The living quarters are comfortable but far from luxurious, and the noise is continuous.

Britain is in the middle of a serious crisis. We are desperately in need of a new form of energy which will be capable of generating enough power to see the country's homes, businesses and industries into the twenty – first century.

At the moment, more than 90% of Britain's energy needs are met by burning fossil fuels or generated in nuclear power stations. Unfortunately, those are not renewable sources of energy, and once they are exhausted, that's all.

Moreover, they emit detrimental gases, which contribute to global warming and climate changes.

How they can we produce enough energy to power an entire country without damaging the environment ? What can we use as an alternative reliable form of energy, which will generate as much power as fossil fuels and nuclear energy, but have none of the drawbacks? As people are increasingly coming to realize , the answer is all around us. It's wind power.

Wind power is an alternative energy source which has been used for many years in countries like Holland and Denmark. In fact today it is the world's fastest-growing source of energy. Strangely enough, even though it is one of the windiest countries in Europe, Britain has been slow to take advantage of wind power. The strong winds blowing around Britain's coastline could easily be used to provide us with all our power needs. All we need to do is build some wind farms.

Wind farms are actually arrays of electricity – generating wind turbines, which are tall, slim towers with two or three rotor blades at the top. The wind turns the blades, which spin a pole. This pole is connected to a generator, where the electricity is made. There can be as few as one and as many as thousands of wind turbines in a single array. Computers monitor the wind direction and speed, and can shut down the turbines if the wind becomes too strong.

What is more, wind turbines make hardly any noise and they are not unpleasant to look at. Although wind farms do ake up a lot of place, they are often located on unoccupied sites or in areas that can also be used for farming.

Building wind farms at sea is also possible. In fact, the stronger winds generated at sea make offshore wind farms a practical alternative. Offshore wind farms also mean that much larger turbines can be built without objections from the public.

A single wind turbine can produce enough electricity to power 375 homes and these wind farms are already making a small but signifcant difference. At the moment there are only around sixty wind farms in Britain both on land and offshore. As this number increases, we may well see wind power supplying as much as 10% of world's electricity demands and up to 20% of Britain's total.

So, why delay? Wind power offers a solution to all our energy problems by being a renewable, clean and safe source of energy which is easy to live and work with and which can help us protect our environment for future generations.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Computers.

Computers play an important role in the lives of most of us today, whether we realize it or not. They have become a necessary part of modern life and every office, school, university or home has a computer of some kind these days.

One of the main advantages is the time that can be saved by using a computer. This is especially beneficial in the workplace, where employees can do their work far faster than they could in the past. Also, our everyday lives are made easier – from going to the bank to doing the shopping.

Furthermore, computers can save a lot of storage space. Storing information on computer discs is one the most efficient ways of keeping data. One computer disc can hold the same amount of information as hundreds of books. In addition to this, computers can be educational and fun. From a very young age, children can gain basic computer skills through programs that allow them to learn, draw, paint and play. In today’s technological world, this knowledge can only them in the future. Besides, the Internet allows computer users around the world to send messages and information to each other.

However, there are various negative aspects to using computers. Many jobs have been lost due to the fact that computers can do a lot of tasks more efficiently than humans. This has led to high unemployment in many countries. What is more, computers can actually cause health problems. Some people claim that our life has become too dependent on computers. Also, they point out such negative things as computer fraud, that is, the use of computers for dishonest or criminal activities, for example using a computer system illegally to change financial records. Besides, computers quickly become obsolete, so they soon need to be replaced.

So, everyone decides for himself whether computers do good or harm to humans, but it’s is impossible to do without them nowadays.
