My Mother Loved Me the Right Way

Do you know that since I was a kid, my mother never gave me what I wanted?

When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to have doughnuts and cakes in my lunchbox just like my friends. But she always packed oatmeal for me. When I was in elementary school, I wanted soda and fried chicken just my friends had. But she always packed milk and whole wheat bread for me. All my friends called me a baby. But later I realized that they were the ones with the baby fat. For my birthday, I wanted a big cake. But my mother baked many small cakes… So I could share them with many less fortunate friends. I never forgot the smiles that I saw on their faces that day.

When I was at junior high school, I wanted glittery high heel shoes so much, but my mother got me canvas shoes. However, she did decorate the shoes and all my friends wanted to have them too. I had to admit the shoes were not just pretty, but also very comfortable. But of course, my friends couldn’t find it in any stores. In high school, I wanted a collection of fashionable tank tops. But my mother knitted me a collection of sweaters. So during the winter, I was always the most fashionable and the warmest among my friends.

My friend got diamond earrings as her graduation gift from her mother. I wished my mother would give me the same thing. But she gave me a savings account that couldn’t be drawn until I turned 55. In college, I wanted beautiful dresses. But my mother got me many blouses, skirts and suits. Later I realized that I always looked the best during job interviews.

When I got my first job, I wished to have a two-doo sport car that could speed up as fast as lightning. But my mother bought me a four-door energy saving car and read me the list of all the safety features until I was bored. Several years later I still used the car and realized that if I had to choose a car, I would choose the same one.

So you see… my Mother never gave me what I wanted. But she always gave me what I needed.
