The Problem of Formation a Multicultural Person in the Conditions of Modern Education.
Bashirova R.M., the teacher of English language at a secondary school № 24, Kazan
In 1995 UNESCO adopted the project “On the Way to the World Culture”. This project included the system of values, the relationships and traditions, which reflected the respect to a human being, tolerance, solidarity and coexistence among various cultural groups of world population and the dialogue of cultures.
For the whole system of education the main purpose of the program is that through the dialogue of cultures the mankind could achieve the development of national self-consciousness, tolerance and national agreement.
Eighteen years have passed but the program is still alive, it is working and is active nowadays.
The new language policy in the field of school education demands the improvement of the contents of linguistic education, i.e. it means that we should study a foreign language through its culture and traditions.
In the conditions of school education the main motivation to studying a foreign language becomes an interest to the culture of a foreign country and its people.
On the other hand, the cultural component is conductive to become proficient in a foreign language, as a means of communication among people.
Practice shows that the situation of communication, that based on motivation, is an effective stimulation in studying a foreign language. The process of mastering becomes a creative discovery of the country and its people.
Taking into consideration that nowadays more and more students go abroad for travelling and studying they can compare different cultures. The teachers try to give a clear view about the real life abroad , to show their customs, habits and traditions. They try not only to compare cultures , but to find something common in our way of life.
Tourist and educational journeys, language centers in summer camps have become a real habit. They strengthen the motivation to studying a foreign language, become a stimulation to cultural communication. This also activates the interest to the culture of native country and its national features.
Our school has got a great experience in achieving these targets. We, the teachers of our school, use not only traditional methods but also modern technologies. The method of projects is very popular among our students. We take part in all contests and competitions that are held in Kazan. The tradition of our school is to held scientific conferences “The World of Science”. The students of our school prepare the reports concerning different cultural aspects comparing them with our national features. Every year the students of our school take part in contest named after Shariff Mudaris, in which they translate the national works of arts into English.
Proposing the dialogue of cultures as a philosophy and the purpose of studying a foreign language, we could speak about efficiency, in case, a result of comparing a foreign and native languages and their cultures the students could:
- see not only the difference, but also the similarity of two countries;
- adopt the difference as a standard of cultural coexistence in a modern multicultural world;
- form an active life position against social inequality and discrimination.
