Комплекс упражнений «Travelling by plane»

Цель – совершенствование речевых умений

Exercise 1.

Meeting at the airport

Speech task: Work in pairs. You are one of the one of the persons depicted in the picture. Get yourself a pair, using cues from two columns.


1. Would you like me to help you with your baggage?

2. Has the plane landed yet?

3. Is this your first visit to London?

4. May I sit here?

5. Are we allowed to smoke in here?

6. Was the weather cold in Moscow when you left?

7. Hey, it’s great to see you again.

8. Do you want a cup of coffee?

9. How was your flight?

10. Have you been waiting long?

11 Excuse me, did you have to pay for that baggage cart?

12. Excuse me, are you Mr.Parker?


Responses:

a) You too.

b) No, they’re free.

c) Not too bad, thanks.

d) Yes, I’m looking forward to it.

e) Please do.

f) It’s OK, thanks, I can manage.

g) Yes, it was dreadful!

h) No, sorry, I’m not.

i) No, it’s going to be twenty minutes late.

j)I’m afraid not.

k) No, just a few minutes.

l) I’d prefer a gin and tonic.


Exercise2.

Polylogical conversation with the class.

Speech task: Open the brackets and tell what we must do and what we mustn’t do before the flight:


We (must) pack our things.

We (must) miss the flight.

We (must) buy tickets at the ticket office.

We (must) have sharp objects in our baggage.

We (must) exchange money at the currency exchange if we fly to a foreign country.

We (must) lose our bags.

We (must) get information about the flight at the information desk.

We (must) have dangerous things in our bags.

We (must) learn English.

We (must) be late.


Exercise 3.

Speech task: You are a passenger who decided to do shopping at the airport store. Ask the shop-assistant to help you

Speech supports: guide words.

  • I’m looking for…

  • I want to buy…

  • A souvenir

  • A shirt

  • What have you got in the line of…?

  • What else, please?

  • How about…?

  • How much is it?

  • What size are you?

Exercise4.

At customs.


Speech task: Work in pairs. Select from the table the correct etiquette phrases and make up a conversation between the customs officer and the passenger.

Exercise 5.

Speech task: You met unknown person at the airport. Exchange views on the best travel option, your plans for the summer and your preferences for summer holidays.

Using cues and responses from the exercise 1 as the beginning, make up a dialogue according to the following scheme:

Ask what country the interlocutor is going to and what he is going to do there

Tell about your favourite kind of summer activities

Tell him/her why you are planning to travel abroad, what country you are going to, what you are going to do there

Wish a good holiday!

Express your opinion about the preferences of the interlocutor and ask about his/her plans

Specify in what country you leave for, what you will do there, name your favourite type of summer activities and ask the interlocutor what kind of holiday he prefers

Answer why you like or don't like to fly by plane, tell about your favourite kind of transport. Explain that the purpose of the trip is to travel abroad

Exercise 6.

Speech task: exchange views with your partner about your expectations of the future holiday.

Speech supports: the cards.

The cards describe who you are, where you are going to rest and what you expect from the rest. And also, what kind of vacation you prefer, how you like to travel.

Card 1.

You are a student, a lover of extreme recreation, you are flying to Africa. You're going to stay in excellent campsand join in wildlife tours. You love to fly by plane, although you also like travelling by ship.

Card 2.

You are an employee of a large company and going to rest in Spain. You can expect relaxing in a beautiful apartment by the sea, visiting indoor leisure centre and a lot of pleasures. You do not like travelling by plane, you think that this is a dangerous kind of travelling. Your favourite way of travelling is on foot.

Exercise 2.

Speech task: Explain why you or other people did this

Model:

  • “I Know that the weather will be good during the whole week” said Sergey. You went to rest returned displeased. Why did you go with him?

  • We went to rest because Sergei said that the weather would be good the whole week. But it was raining the whole week. Sergei was wrong.


  • “This museum works on Monday” said Katerina. You went to museum but it was closed. Why did you go to the museum?



  • “Egypt is the s the best place for rest” said tour agent. You went to Egypt and had a very good rest. Why did you go to Egypt?



  • “There is sale in the shop” said Ann to her friend, Kate. Kate went to the shop but the prices were very high. Why did Kate go to the shop?



  • “I will bring you a souvenir when I arrive” promised Alexander to his little sister. Sister looked forward to him. Why?


Exercise 3.

Speech task: Someone's talking about London. But not all of his statements are true. Determine where the truth and where the lie. Correct him.

True or false:

  1. London is an ancient city. Its history goes back to Roman times.

  2. London is the capital of Scotland.

  3. The Thames is the main river of London.

  4. Downing Street is the residence of the British kings.

  5. Trafalgar Square is in the centre of the East End.

  6. The West End of London is the industrial area and the place where the working people live.

  7. Big Ban is a symbol of London.

  8. The British Parliament consist of three chambers.

  9. Oxford University is located in London.

  10. There are such famous sights as Buckingham Palace, British Museum, Louvre in London.


Exercise4.

Speech task: you just got back from a trip abroad. Your friend asks about your impressions

Speech supports:

  1. What countries have you visited?

  2. What were you doing there?

  3. What sights did you manage to watch?

  4. What was the most vivid impression of the trip?

Etc.


Exercise5.

Speech task: exchange views on the state of historical and cultural monuments that are in danger.

Teacher: Armed conflict, climate change and natural disasters threaten some of humanity's greatest achievements. Some of them are already lost forever. Together with them we lose part of our history and culture.


Points for discussion:

  1. What monuments of culture and art do you know? What value are they to humanity?

  2. What monuments of culture and art do you know in the world and in Russia, which are now in poor condition, have been damaged or destroyed?

  3. What causes of these processes can you name?

  4. What role does a person play in the destruction of monuments and works of art?

  5. What should we do to protect monuments?
