Being the major means of human communication, language serves as the basic channel between generations, and also a necessary condition of education and training. Since the birth, most of the parents bring up their children using small forms of folklore, which have influence on normal development of speech and acquaint children with the origins of national culture. Small forms of folklore can be found in every human culture. They can include songs, history, proverbs, jokes, popular beliefs, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, games, riddles and customs that are the traditions of a culture. Today we are getting together to review several examples from different folklore genres in English, Russian and Tatar languages. And the purpose of this study is to investigate an influence of small forms of folklore on normal development of speech in the preschool childhood. It’s very interesting fact that they are curiously alike in all these languages.

Being the major means of human communication, language serves as the basic channel between generations, and also a necessary condition of education and training.

Normal speech in any language progresses through stages of cooing, babbling, echolalia, jargon, words and word combinations, and sentence formation. A nonstandard form of speech used by adults in talking to toddlers and infants is usually called Baby talk. Baby talk is also characterized by the shortening and simplifying of words, with the possible addition of slurred words and nonverbal utterances, and can invoke a vocabulary of its own.

Baby talk, language regardless, usually consists of a muddle of words, including names for family members, names for animals, eating and foods, bodily functions, sleeping, and may be sprinkled with nonverbal utterances. Most words invented by parents have a logical meaning, although the nonverbal sounds are usually completely meaningless and just fit the speech together.

Some utterances are invented by parents within a particular family unit, others differ in meaning from place to place, or are passed down from parent to parent over generations, while others are quite widely known and used within most families and are considered standard or traditional words.

Some examples of widely-used baby talk words and phrases in English the same as in Russian and Tatar languages; many of which are not found within standard dictionaries but may be classified as nonstandard or childish terms, for example:

Baba, bubba (baby, granny or an onomatopoeic term for sheep)

bye (go to bed, sleeping, bedtime)

boo-boo (wound, pain or bruise)

bow-wow (dog)

choo-choo (train)

din-din (bell)

gee- goo- goo (horse)

moo-moo (cow)

no-no (taboo)

num- nums (food/dinner)

byacky (disgusting)

nana (grandmother)

oopsie, oops (accident)

owie (wound or bruise)

pee-pee (urinate)

wawa (water)

yum-yum,nyam-nyam (meal time, informally interpreted as an expression of delight towards a pleasant-tasting food)

mama (mother)

uppie (wanting to be picked up)

vroom-vroom or brrrm-brrrm (car)



Normal development of oral speech in the preschool childhood lays the foundation for successful training at school. The preschool age is the period of active mastering of a spoken language by the child, formation and development of all parts of speech — phonetic, lexical and grammatical.

Since the birth, most of the parents bring up their children using small forms of folklore, which have influence on normal development of speech and acquaint children with the origins of national culture. Small forms of folklore are laconic and precise, deep and rhythmical in form. Art phonetics helps children pronounce words clearly. Small forms of folklore can be found in every human culture. They can include songs, history, proverbs, jokes, popular beliefs, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, games, riddles and customs that are the traditions of a culture. Today we are getting together to review several examples from different folklore genres in English, Russian and Tatar languages. And the purpose of this study is to investigate an influence of small forms of folklore on normal development of speech in the preschool childhood. It’s very interesting fact that they are curiously alike in all these languages.


A lullaby is a soothing song, usually sung to young children before they go to sleep, with the intention of speeding that process. As a result they are often simple and repetitive. Simple repetitive songs are common in many cultures. Repetition serves various educational purposes: repetition aids memory, can aid in learning punctuation and reading skills, and is very valuable in learning languages. In popular culture the use of repetition in songs, helps solidifies it in a person’s memory, allowing it to become more easily recognized.

Hush, Little Baby is a traditional lullaby. Usually the lyrics of lullabies promise all kinds of rewards to the child if he or she is quiet.

Hush, little baby, don't say a word, Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.

And if that mockingbird don't sing, Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.

And if that diamond ring turns brass, Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass.

And if that looking glass gets broke, Mama's gonna buy you a dog.

And if that dog won't bark, Mama's gonna buy you a horse and a cart.

And if that horse and cart fall down, well you'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.


Баю-баю-баиньки,

A fingerplay is a type of a nursery rhyme for very young children that use hand movements coordinated with words to engage and sustain children's interest. Fingerplays can be in the form of little songs or chants. Typical examples would be the Itsy Bitsy Spider, Round and round the garden, or This Little Piggy. Preschool teachers use fingerplays to introduce poetry to children and introduce new concepts. They can also help children develop such skills as fine motor co-ordination and following directions.



This little piggy went to the market.

This little piggy stayed home.

This little piggy had roast beef,

This little piggy had none.

And this little piggy went

“Wee wee wee” all the way home.

A counting-out game is a simple game intended to select a person to be "it", often for the purpose of playing another game. These games usually require no materials, and are played with spoken words or hand gestures. They develop children’s imaginative thinking and memory, produces a sense of rhythm, train breath and voice. Selection rhymes are an important part of childhood. If a game is being set up and nobody wants to volunteer for a particular part or position, then a selection rhyme is used to choose the unfortunate individual.



Eena meena mina mo,

Where do all the Frenchmen go?

To the East and to the West,

To the bonny birdie's nest;

Apples in the garden,

Fishes in the sea,

If you want a pretty girl

Please choose me!


Ip dip doo

Doggy did a poo

Went to the cinema at half-past two

When the film started

Everybody farted

A proverb is a short, generally known sentence of the folk which contains wisdom, truth, morals, and traditional views in a metaphorical, fixed and memorable form and which is handed down from generation to generation. If a proverb is distinguished by particularly good phrasing, it may be known as an aphorism. Sometimes they are used as a way of saying something gently, in a veiled way. Proverbs can also be used to simply make a conversation/discussion livelier. The wisdom is in the form of a general observation about the world or a bit of advice, sometimes more nearly an attitude toward a situation.

Business before pleasure. - Делу время, потехе час. -Уйнавын уйна, эшең турында да уйла.

Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today. - Не откладывай на завтра то, что можно сделать сегодня. -Бүгенге эшне таңга калдырма.

Cut the coat according to the cloth. - По одёжке протягивай ножки. - Киемне кешесенә карап кисәләр.


If you run after two hares, you will catch neither. -За двумя зайцами погонишься, ни одного не поймаешь. - Ике куян кусаң, берсен дә тотмассың.


An old wives' tale is a type of urban legend, similar to a proverb, which is generally passed down by old wives to a younger generation. Such "tales" usually consist of superstition, or unverified claims with exaggerated and/or untrue details. Today old wives' tales are still common among children in school playgrounds. Old wives' tales often concern pregnancy, puberty and nutrition. Old wives’ tales originate in the oral tradition of storytelling. They were generally propagated by illiterate women, telling stories to each other or to children. The stories did not attempt to moralize, but to teach lessons and make difficult concepts like death or coming of age easy for children to understand. Also these stories are used to scare children so they don't do certain things.

Examples of old wives' tales include:

Ice cream leads to nightmares.-Еда перед сном-к кошмарам.-Йоклар алдыннан ашама бәлеш-күрмәссең начар төш.

It's bad luck to give a pair of gloves to a friend unless you receive something in exchange.-Одалживание у соседей предметов домашнего обихода требует символической платы, будучи внесёнными в чужой дом, они делаются собственностью этого дома.- Бүләк биргән бүләк көтә.

Breaking a mirror will earn a person seven years of bad luck.-Разбить зеркало-к неприятностям.-Көзге төшеп ватылса-тормышың бозыла.

If your nose itches, relatives are coming to visit.-Нос чешется-к подаркам. - Борын очы кычытса, күчтәнәч килә.


A tongue twister is a phrase, sentence or rhyme that presents difficulties when spoken because it contains similar sounds. These short amusing poems with sounds difficult to pronounce have become inalienable part of any nation’s folklore. Doctors, teachers, parents use tongue-twisters working with children. The exercises will help to improve diction of children and adults. They also will help to change quickly positions of the articulating organs when pronouncing difficult combinations of sounds. They can help to eliminate weak pronunciation, like “with stones in one’s mouth”. Tongue-twisters are also useful for sound automatism training and in the treatment of some speech defects.

Carl stole corals from Clara and Clara stole clarinet from Carl. -Карл у Клары украл кораллы, а Клара у Карла украла кларнет. -Карл Клараның коралларын урлаган,ә Клара Карлның кларнетын урлаган.

I miss my Miss Swiss, my miss Swiss misses me.

A flea and a fly flew up in a flue. Said the flea, "Let us fly!" Said the fly, "Let us flee!" So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

Шли три попа, три Прокопья-попа, три Прокопьевича, говорили про попа, про Прокопья-попа, про Прокопьевича.

Nursery rhymes making jokes and teasing someone playfully is a form of children's humor. They are based on a sense of rhythm and sense of the word. The most common rhyme can be a poetic miniature:

Why do you cry, Willy?
Why do you cry?
Why, Willy, Why, Willy,
Why, Willy, Why?

Купил лошадь без хвоста

Сел задом наперед

И поехал в огород

Только конь поторопился

Nursery rhymes appear to be universal in human society. It has been proved that nursery rhymes aid in a child's development. Research also supports the assertion that rhyme increases a child's ability in spatial reasoning, which leads to greater success in school in the subjects of mathematics and science.

Ladybug

Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home,

Your house in on fire and your children are gone,

All except one and that's little Ann,

For she crept under the frying pan.



Бабочка-коробочка, улети на небко,

Teddy

A riddle is a statement or question or phrase having a double or veiled meaning, put forth as a puzzle to be solved. Riddles are of two types: enigmas, which are problems generally expressed in metaphorical or allegorical language that require ingenuity and careful thinking for their solution, and conundrums, which are questions relying for their effects on punning in either the question or the answer. The Riddle Game is a formalized guessing game, a contest of wit and skill in which players take turns asking riddles. Solving riddles develops "a poetic view of reality" in children, an ability to analyze, synthesize, draw conclusions, identify the characteristic and expressive features of an object or phenomenon.


When do elephants have eight feet? (When there are two of them) – Когда слоны имеют восемь ног? –Хайванның кайчан сигез аягы була?


Three eyes have I, all in a row;

when the green one opens, all go.

A fairy tale is a type of short story that typically features folkloric characters, such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants or gnomes, and usually magic or enchantments. Wisdom of many generations lies in the fairy tales. Thus, influence of this kind of folk art in the child's development is only positive.


The Story of the Three Bears. - Три медведя.-Өч аю.

The golden fish.-Золотая рыбка.-Алтын балык.


To sum it up, I’d like to say that folklore genres play an important part in normal development of spoken language. Moreover, children could learn moral standards from them. They are so educational. Folklore creations are a unique way to transfer wisdom, stored by different generations. And childhood is a time when perhaps the real, genuine immersion in the sources of any national culture whether it is English, Russian or Tatar. Children’s folklore is curiously alike in all these languages.
