Generation". »
Generation.
Current generation of people is considered by many to be uncultured and stupid, but is that statement true? Are there really no redeeming factors about this new generation? Is our world doomed, or is hope, that deep inside, below all that garbage they consume from media and social networks, there’s a light of hope?
Firstly, let’s discuss good things about our current generation. I said previously that most things social networks give are garbage, and serve as bad influence. However, while I stand my ground that social networks are bad, I won’t decline there are tons of fantastic things that came from these networks, and internet as a whole. Even my knowledge of English came from videos on YouTube, and half of my general knowledge came from social networks and Wikipedia. So, in my opinion, such a big involvement of Internet in lives of current generation can lead to many good things. And, let’s don’t forget, art, as well as culture, always moves forward. Eighty years ago movies were considered a cheap rip-off of theatre, yet now it’s considered to be art by many people.
But, what if they don’t want to learn? What if this generation would decide not to pay attention to the good things? What if they just want to mindlessly absorb nonsense, and not learn? What if people who use internet as a tool to get information, are just exceptions from the crowd?
However, I won’t deny that I use internet mostly for entertainment. Sure, I do browse Wikipedia from time to time, and I do learn quite a lot from my journeys to internet. But, as it stands, internet is for the most part a source of entertainment to me. Despite that I don’t think of myself as a dumb person, quite the opposite in fact. So, maybe that “garbage” that I was talking about previously, isn’t that bad? Maybe it doesn’t affect our generation as much as people think it does.
To conclude, I don’t think this “new” generation is as bad as people think of them. My opinion is that, the garbage they are consuming from the social networks may be what would end the cultural progress of the generation. My opinion is that we should remain optimistic. Maybe in the end they will realise how wrong they were for not learning about culture.
