OUT - OF – LESSON

The theme of the lesson:

English around the world

Obgectives: 1. To get new information about the English language its history its role the world.

2. To develop listening speaking reading writing skills. To practice identifying accents keeping in mind important historical dates enriching knowledge about global English.

3. To each the students to express their opinions about the role of English and Kazakh in life.

Type of the lesson: Getting new information.

Interaction: English Kazakh Geography History

Equipment: A cassette a map of the world vocabulary list brain storming board lever cards compositions.

Procedure of the lesson

Organization moment- Teacher acquaints the the students with the main tasks of the lesson:

  1. Getting information about English

  2. Commenting on historical dates

  3. Studying accent differences

  4. Comparing Kazakh regional accents

  5. Emphasizing the role of English and Kazakh

II. Warm – up Brain – storming exercises for reminding the main events from the previous

Culture Corner I. (Using the placard with the following questions Teacher controls the students knowledge on the History of English)

  1. Whe did the story of English begin? (in the 5-th century)

  2. What influence did Cristianity have on English? (introduced new words)

  3. What happened after the Norman Conquest (introduced new words)

  4. When did English become official language? (in the 15 century)

  5. What did Caxton bring from Belgium? (printing press. 1476)

  6. Who was at the head of English literature? (Geoffrey Chaucer)

  7. What king of period was the late 16 century? (period of Shakespeare and Bible in English)

  8. Why is Samuel Johnson s name in history of English? (dictionary of English, 1753, 43000 words)

III. The students: Can you guess what the theme of the lesson will be? What do those bold points mean?

Students give appropriate answers classify the countries according to the groups. Presentation of the there – using hand made map with bold points. Teacher asks

IV. Listening and getting – 1. Students listen to the first part of the lecture and answer information.

2. Teacher explains the unknown vocabulary which is not in the dictionary.

3. Students identify language classification:

First language: Australia Canada Ireland Jamaica New Zealand the USA

Second language: India Kenya Nigeria Pakistan the Philippines Singapore South Africa Sri Lanka Zimbabwe.

Foreign language: Sweden the Netherlands etc.

V. Listening to the second part of the lecture:

1. Students match the dates with events.

2. Do tru false exercises

3. Answer Teacher questions.

1. How had English become a world language? (because of the expansion of the British Empire in 18-19 centuries)

2. How many people in the world speak English as the first language? (400 mln.)

3. What does «lingua franca» mean? (a way of communicating from other parts of the country)

4. What can you say about Noah Webster? (Dictionary of American English 1806)

5. What influenced American English after 1848? (Immigration from Germany Central Europe and Italy)

6. When did Canadian English start life? (When British loyalists moved into Canada in 1782)

7. How long was Australia one big prison? (50 years)

8. When did New Zealand English start? (1840)

VI. Group work – Students work in two groups with level cards:

VII. To identify British American spelling and pronunciation.

VIII. Conclusion - Students expressing their opinions answer the following questions:

  1. What new information have you got from the lectures?

  2. Can you say that you improved your knowledge in Geography History Kazakh?

  3. What interesting things have you learnt about accents?

  4. Are the languages important in peoples lives? Why? Why not?
