Poems

1.“Hug the Earth”(by Lorraine Bayes).

Walking along feeling free

Feeling the earth here with me

And I love her, she loves me

I hug the Earth, the Earth hugs me

She's our friend,

We’d like to be together forever

The earth is a garden

It’s a beautiful place

For all living creatures,

For all the human race

Helping Mother Earth

We can peacefully roam.

We all deserve a place

We can call our home.

Food is a treasure from the soil and the sea.

Clean, fresh air from the plants and the trees.

The warmth of the sun giving life each day

Turns water into rain, it's nature's way.

And I would like to thank you, Mother Earth,

I like to see you dressed in green and blue

I want to be by you.

2. What Have They Done to the World?

What have they done to the seas, my friend?

What have they done to the seas?

What have they done to the rivers, my friend?

What have they done to the trees?

What have they done to our land, my friend?

This land which is ours from our birth.

What have they done to our forests, my friend?

What have they done to the earth?

What have they done to the skies, my friend?

Skies that are blue and so clear.

What have they done to the skies, my friend?

What have they done to the air?

BIG CATS

15,000,000 big cats: tigers, snow leopards, jaguars and lynxes are killed every year for their skins (шкуры).

Skins are used to make fur coats and jackets which are sold at very high prices: a quality lynx coat, for example, cost at least £ lO,OOO. The main exporter of cat skins is South America, and they are imported by the European Community, the Unites States and Japan.

Endangered Species of Animals

Grey wolf

Ever since Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf has been personified as a devilish creature and a threat to man. Exaggerated fears and loss of habitat may result in the disappearance of this great predator.

Cheetah

Even the fastest animal on earth is defenseless against poachers. In recent years, as many as 5,000 cheetahs have been killed annually. Today the wild cheetah is only found in a few east African parks and reserves.

Lowland gorilla

Despite its enormous strength and awesome appearance, the gorilla is a mild- natured animal. But due to loss of habitat and extensive hunting, one of our closest relatives is threatened.

Red kangaroo

Kangaroos are slaughtered by the millions each year in their native Australian habitat There people see them as pests competing with sheep for grazing land.

Cape penguin

The cape penguin is South Africa's only resident and breeding penguin. Overexploitation of fishing grounds in this region is resulting in an overall decline of this penguin and other fish-eating shore birds.

Humpback whale

Unafraid of ships, the humpback whale was easily approached by hunters, resulting in a dwindling population of only 10.000 animals today. Their playfulness and spectacular leaps out of the water make them a favourite among whale watchers.

Green sea turtle

The green sea turtle, as well as all other sea turtle species, have been over- exploited for their meat, eggs, oil and skin. Thus, their population is dangerously low.

Whooping crane

This crane once lived in the northern U.S. and in the coastal prairies of the Midwest Today the total population of the whooping crane may only total 50, due to the spread of civilization.

African elephant

It is estimated that several hundred thousand elephants remain in Africa,

down from over a million less than 10 years ago. As many as 300 are slaughtered every

day to supply the world's ivory trade. If this trend continues, by the turn of the century

the largest living land mammal could disappear from the face of the earth - forever.

The animal world of the UK

  1. Animals, Birds

wild boar - кабан

reindeer – северный олень

eagle - орел

badger - барсук

otter - выдра

seal - тюлень

sea-gull - чайка

The fauna of the British Isles is similar to that of Europe. Some of the mammals such as the bear, the wolf, the wild boar and the reindeer have become extinct. The Britain known to the Saxons, Vikings and Normans was very different from the one we know today. Deer, wolves, bears and eagles were common. The origins of some of the places tell us about this. Derby means "many deer near one village". Everton comes from "eofor", which meant "wild boar that lived in forests". Nowadays, foxes, badgers and otters live on the British Isles. On various parts of the coast there are seals. Sea-gulls and other sea birds usually nest near the coast. There are three species of snakes, of which only one is venomous.

QUESTIONS

  1. What is the fauna of the British Isles similar to?

  2. What animals have become extinct?

  3. What does Derby mean?

  4. How many species of snakes are there in Britain?

  5. How can you explain the word "venomous"?

  1. London Zoo

London Zoo was opened in 1827 by the Zoological Society of London. The first enclosures were built to reflect the places they came from. African animals were kept in grass huts, for instance.

Today there are more than 8,000 animals in the zoo. Some are very, so they are encouraged to breed and are studied by conservationists. Many of the animals were born in London Zoo or in other zoos around the world.

The elephants have the biggest appetite in the zoo. An elephant's daily diet consists of hay, grass, linseed cakes, cabbages, carrots, potatoes, dates, salt, vitamins and minerals, washed down with 100 litres of water.

You can adopt an animal at London Zoo for a year. The cost depends on the animal you choose, and is based on the amount of food it eats in a year. Your

name goes on a plaque near the animal's cage.

Every day you can watch animals being fed, for instance snakes, lions and seals. Around London Zoo there are trays of exhibits you can touch, for example you might be able to handle a crocodile skin or a snake skeleton.

In summer you can have a ride on a pony, donkey or camel, or a cart pulled by a South American llama.

3. Fauna Attractions

Museums

At the Natural History Museum in New York City there are full-size dinosaur models and a 100-foot model of a blue whale.

Buffalo Bill was a famous buffalo hunter and a showman. His "Wild West Show" was popular all over the country and in Europe. You can learn about him at the museum in Cody.

A shark tank is one of the interesting things to see at the aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland.

Mountain lions and bighorn sheep are desert animals. You can see them at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. In the Whale Museum on San Juan Island, Washington, there are puzzles and games to play about whales. A "hotline" map tells you each time a whale is spotted.

Shows, contests

There are all sorts of sea creatures at "Sea World” in San Antonio, Texas, including penguins and dolphins. One show features killer whales, that make spectacular leaps from the water.

At the "Iowa State Fair", in August, there is a hog-calling contest. The farmer who calls his pigs in the quickest way is the winner.

Zoos

Brookfield Zoo, Illinois, has rare animals from all over the world.

San Diego Zoo has a huge number of animals.

At the Bronx Children’s Zoo, in New York City, you can learn many things about animals by doing what animals do - such as climbing a giant spider's web.

Parks

There are masses of dinosaur tracks in Dinosaur Park, near Hartford, Connecticut.

From Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier Park, there are fine views of mountain lakes and glaciers. You might see a bald eagle, the American national bird.

Monuments, statues

There is a Dinosaur National Monument in Utah.

The world's largest Buffalo is an enormous statue near Jamestown. It is in memory of buffaloes that lived on the prairie.

People tell stories of an imaginary giant lumberjack, named Paul Bunyan. At Bemidji, Minnesota, there are statues of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe.

One year insects ate the cotton crop in Alabama. Farmers planted peanuts and other crops instead. These made more money, so they put up a statue to honour these insects in Enterprise, Alabama, in thanks.

QUESTIONS

  1. Where can one see a 100-foot model of a blue whale?

  2. What is the Bronx Children's Zoo famous for?

  3. What bird can be seen in Glacier Park? What does it symbolize?

  4. Why did the farmers of Alabama decide to put up a statue to honour insects?

Если учитель называет слова, которые не могут быть ответом на вопрос, играющие должны поднять руку. Например, учитель задает вопрос: What flies? и в быстром темпе начинает перечислять: «А bird, a tree, a kite, a frog». Когда он называет предмет, который не может летать, играющие поднимают руки. Если участник игры не поднял руку, ему предлагается придумать предложение, употребив данное слово. Если он не выполнит это задание, то выбывает из игры.
