Plan
I. Well-known facts about Baikalsk.
II. The land of festivals.
III. What`s the phenomenon of the town?
IV. Internet resources.
The aim of this work is to attract your attention to a small town with eventful cultural life and history. Also we want to show what activities, namely festivals are held in our native town Baikalsk. We used such methods as interview, survey, personal experience. The resources were articles from local newspaper “Baikalskie vesti” and Internet.
Baikalsk is the southern point on the Baikal map and it is situated between Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude. It is 6 hours drive from the capital of Buryatiya. The population is only 13,125 people (2014). Earlier Baikalsk used to be famous for its Pulp and Paper plant now it does not work and we can boast of clean and fresh air. The territory near Baikalsk was included into tourism recreation zone which is called “Baikal Gate”. Now most of winter visitors are attracted by Mountain ski resort «Gora Sobolinaya» and it is well-known all Russia round. Visitors come to go down hill skiing, to swim in the pool, to enjoy numerous saunas or just relax in a calm and quiet town.
There are no so many cities which are taken films about. There is such a film about Baikalsk devoted to the environmental problems of the lake. In July last year we celebrated the 85th anniversary of producer of the film Vasiliy Shukshin. 45 years ago when our town was being built and the pulp started working the film “At the lake” was being made. It was accepted the best film of the year 1970. Now we have the restaurant with such a name.
Today we would like to tell you about cultural life which is focused in the Recriation Hall “Yubileiniy” (which is 45). Its activity develops in different ways: amateur and professional theatre art, amateur singing, crafting, hosting various contests, workshops, assembles, creating information internet space and Wi-Fi zone.
Not so many people consider Baikalsk to be the cultural town, but we Baikalskers name it the land of festivals. A great number of festivals are hosted every year. Now Recreation Hall “Jubileiniy” is the heart of the festival life. Most of events were born and developed here.
1) From 1st to 4th May 2014 the 10th National contest of amateur andprofessional youth creativity “Moscow-Baikalsk transit” “ROSA VETROV-2014” was held in Baikalsk. More than 700 participants came from Chita, Kransoyarsk and Buryatiya. For 4 days the organizers hold not only contests but theoretical and practical workshops. In jury we could see the representatives of art professionals from Moscow, St.Peterburg and Irkutsk. The children were evaluated in various nominations: modern and folk dance, instrumental music, folk instruments, pop and academic vocal. The winners of the competition were awarded and invited to final level in Moscow and international level in Sochi.
2) Baikalsk theatre “Lyudi” has developed the idea of National Theatre Festival-Laboratory “Baikal Stage”. Thanks to their actitivity the creative people of Baikalsk and nearby region have a chance to attend the lectures of professors of Moscow Drama Institute named after B.Schukin, Ulan-Ude Academy of Culture and Art and Irkutsk Drama College.
3)National Festival of Kids and Youth Theatre “Theatrical Holidays at the Baikal” was held from 5 till 10 November 2014. The festival joined 14 theatre clubs, more than 200 participants from different parts of the country. A great educational work was done during the holidays. Outstanding members of the jury gave the workshops, lectures and professional discussions. The shown performances were given on a high professional level.
4) The most famous festival in Baikalsk is “Strawberry Fest” which is usually held in the middle of July and lasts three days. There is no need to rack your brains about outings in Baikalsk these days. Tastes differ. But even if you have no idea of the person’s interests there are something to suggest. Gardeners exchange their experience in growing and cooking strawberries. Traditionally the guests enjoy strawberry products, various concerts, shows, discos and other entertainments. Athletes and fans can take part in such various competitions as chess, volleyball and so on. The second day you can buy some souvenirs “Gifts of Baikal”, cooking, strawberry desserts. Last year there was a giant 40 kilo strawberry pie, which was given out. In the evening it was the battle of DJs and contest “Voice Battle” it was broadcast in central television. At midnight we enjoyed a great fire work. These three days Baikalsk turns out to be a great fair with thousands of visitors. At the same time we had Music Festival “Clearwater Revival Fest”, where more than 40 bands from different parts of Russia performed.
5) Besides, there are two festivals of subcultures, such as the legendary festival of rock music with more than 30 groups participants. The next one is the Baikal Moto Fest for bikers. Both are very popular among youth as they are outdoors in the camp.
The list of festival is endless and each of them is unique and interesting.”Baikal koleidoscope” – for young environmentalists, “Solnechniy krug” – regional festival of kids creativity, “Smuglyanka”- devoted to the Victory Day, “Serebryannaya nit” and a local annual contest of twins.
Why was Baikalsk chosen as the land of festival? The survey shows that 40 from 40 Baikalskers (age 30-45) suppose that unique beauty of Baikal attract a great number of tourists. Most of Baikalskers are migrant workers from Tatarstan, Ukraine, Perm, St.Peterburg who brought their culture and way of living with them So a special warm and cosy atmosphere was created in our home town. Baikalskers are creative, curious, well-educated people in permanent search of something new.
