The River Thames known alternatively in parts as the River Isis, is a river that flows through southern England including London.
It is the longest river entirely in England and the second-longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn.
The marks of human activity, in some cases dating back to Pre-Roman Britain, are visible at various points along the river. These include a variety of structures connected with use of the river, such as navigations, bridges and watermills, as well as prehistoric burial mounds.
The lower Thames in the Roman era was a shallow waterway winding through marshes. But centuries of human intervention have transformed it into a deep tidal canal flowing between 200 miles of solid walls; these defend a floodplain where 1.5 million people work and live.
the Thames owes its greatness and significance in the history of England to the fact that its small area is located in London, and this makes the continental city as marine as Petersburg, through which the Neva passes.
For many centuries of its existence, the Thames maintained its status of the coil and human nurse. It was the main transport route through which international trade was carried out, among other things. The port of London and the extensive system of British channels were her loyal assistants in this. And since it was this river that was at the center of numerous events in the annals of England, it is not surprising that Robert Burns called it a “fluid history“.
The River Thames is one of the sights of London. Tourists come to admire the beauty of Cleopatra’s Needle, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
The Thames is the historic heartland of sport rowing in the United Kingdom The Boat Race is a set of annual rowing races between the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club, rowed between eights on the River Thames. The most recent race took place on Sunday 27 March 2016.
Today the Thames has become a symbol of London. You can admire bridges built in many different architectural styles. Twenty-four bridges span the Thames in London, from Kew Bridge to Tower Bridge. Some our railway bridges and there is a footbridge, however most are road bridges.
