The history of this holiday is long. According to one legend Valentine was a Christian Clergyman who was executed on the 14 th of February. But on the eve he had healed a blind girl and had given her letter, signed “Valentine”.

Another legend says that Valentine was an Italian clergyman who was executed because he had helped a young girl and a young man to marry without a permission of the Emperor.

Different poems were popular even in Middle Ages. People began to write Valentines in 1400. In British museums people can see the poems by Charles Duke Orlean.

Nowadays in many countries there is a tradition to exchange little cards – Valentines. But they shouldn’t be signed. People should guess who the author of this or that card is.

People in France were the first to write little poems about their love for their Valentines.

The USA

The Americans give each other red and white sweets. Red colour means their love and white colour – their true and sincere feelings.

Italy

People in Italy like to give each other different sweet things: for example sweets, chocolate and so on. That is why this day is called “sweet”.

Japan

The Japanese hold a contest on the 14 th of February. Each person tries to say about his love louder and more beautiful than others.

Germany

In Germany on the 14 th of February young girls planted leek and gave to every pot a name of a young man. In what pot the leek appeared first, the young man with that name would become the beloved man of that girl.
