Diana Frances Spencer was born in Norfolk, England on July 1, 1961. She was born into a high ranking and important British family. Her father was a Viscount. Her mother came from a family with strong ties to the royal family and Queen Elizabeth II.

She had two older sisters Sarah and Jane and a younger brother Charles.

At school Diana excelled in athletics, music, and art. She did not enjoy math and science. One of her favorite things to do was to work with the elderly and the disabled. She loved to help others.

When she met her future husband, Charles, Diana was working as a part time assistant in a nursery school in London. In 1981, Diana married Prince Charles. Diana was now the Princess of Wales. However, her life was not the fairytale she imagined. The press continued to follow her around whenever she was in public.

Diana gave birth to a son on June 21, 1982. His name was William Arthur Philip Louis. Two years later, Diana had another son, Henry, who was called Prince Harry.

She would often visit sick children or battered women. She spoke for groups such as the Red Cross and AIDS foundations. One of her major efforts was to outlaw the use of landmines in battle.

In the mid 1980s, strains started to appear in the marriage, leading to a divorce in 1992. In the settlement, Diana was given $28 million, plus $600,000 per year but she was to give up the title, «Her Royal Highness.»

On 31 August 1997, Diana was involved in a car accident in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris. She died on the operating table at the hospital aged 36. Her tragic death shocked the world.

The death of Diana had a profound impact on the British public and those in other countries. Over 1 million bouquets of flowers were laid at Buckingham Palace. Her funeral was watched by countless millions around the world.

She is buried on an island at her family estate, Althorp.
In order to maintain privacy, Diana was buried on an island on her family estate, which does not permit visitors. There are 36 oak trees leading to the lake, one for each of her 36 years.

Her nickname was Lady Di, but she did not like people to call her «Di», «Lady Di», «Shy Di», or «Princess Di.»

Diana, Princess of Wales was an iconic figure of the late 20th Century. She epitomised feminine beauty and kindness.
