Kuban dialects

• In our time, the number of languages rapidly decrease on the Earth: every two weeks dying one full language at least. Local languages, folklore and extensive knowledge of the indigenous inhabitants of these places permanently leave us with the disappearance of traditional communities in the Kuban Cossack.

The group of vulnerable languages which received distribution in the Kuban region including such languages as:

• Abaza;
• Yiddish;
• Nogai;
• Gypsy;
• Language Pontic Greeks;
• Turkic;
• Language-Urums Greeks.

• Adygeya;
• Abkhazia;
• Belorussian;
• Ingush;
• Kabardino-Cherkessia;
• Ossetian;
• Chechen;

The interesting fact:

• Ubykh figures as the missing in the list of UNESCO (Ubykhs lived near the modern city of Sochi, not so long ago in Turkey died last representative of the people)

• Balachka  is one of the few existing member in the Kuban dialect. There are three main varieties of historical balachka - Kuban, Don and Mountain.

Kuban-Black Sea Balachka

• Originally starting as a central Ukrainian dialect used by the Black Sea Cossacks who moved to the Kuban in 1792. Over the years the language began to acquire more Russian vocabulary, coinciding with the rising literacy rates in the late 19th century. So Kuban Balachka is a mixed Ukrainian and Russian languages now.

Don Balachka

• The historical closeness of the Don Cossacks with Ukraine led to mutual exchange of communication methods, between the two peoples. The Don Balachka is known for its soft sounds, for example идти (to walk) is said as итить ‘itit’.

Mountain Balachka

• This Balachka differs uniquely from the other Cossack vernaculars in its free use of Circassian terms, particularly from modern Adygeya. However, this dialect is almost lost after the mass exodus of the Russian population with Nadterechya in the early

1990s, except for a small

community in the

northern district of

Dagestan.
