In the north of Thailand in the mountains there lives the Karen tribe Padaung, known for their unusual traditions. There are about 7000 members in this tribe.

All women of the tribe wear multiple brass rings around the neck. The rings are the most prominent sign of female beauty and status.

The rings on the neck are not actually rings, but a spiral from a copper rod. Each ring is about one centimeter thick. The total weight of rings can reach five kilograms. A typical female adult of this tribe can have up to 30 rings around her neck! One woman in Plam Piang Din Village wears 37 brass rings around her neck and this is considered ideal.

Girls start wearing rings at the age of five. With each passing year more rings are added and the neck grows longer. That is why the women of this tribe are sometimes called "female giraffes". They stop adding rings after a marriage.

Women can freely remove and put on rings. Contrary to myths their health doesn't suffer from it at all. Muscles of a neck don’t atrophy. In fact, the longer neck that you see is just an illusion. The heavy weight of the brass rings has actually pressed their collar bones down such that the collar bones appear to be part of the neck instead.

The custom of carrying rings by women on a neck has roots far in the past. Nobody really knows why they do that, but they wear it since generations. There are some versions of how such unusual tradition appeared. Some people believe that they wear the rings to protect themselves from tiger bites. Other ones think that jewelry on a neck makes women more attractive for men from other hill tribes.

Tourists can visit this Karen Village and freely be photographed with long-necked women without additional fee. But in return, to show your gratitude for it, it would be nice to buy a small souvenir of their handicrafts.
