Ready for Labour and Defense

• Ready for Labour and Defense of the USSR (Russian:  «Готов к труду и обороне СССР» ), abbreviated as GTO (Russian: ГТО) was the All-Union physical culture training programme, introduced in the USSR on March 11, 1931 on the initiative by VLKSM.

• GTO was a programme for all Soviet people of almost all ages.
• By the year 1976, 220 million people were awarded GTO badges,  while in 1986 the tests were passed by 33.9 million people.

TRP program adopted in 1931 consisted of two parts:

• I. Be ready to work and defense of the USSR - for students from first through eighth grades containing four age categories. The complex consisted of 16 sports tests. In addition, the owner of the icon BGTO had to be able to hold classes in one of the sports, know the rules and be able to judge the sports games.
• II. Ready for work and defense - for students and the population older than 16 years comprising three stages.

• The program is fundamental in a state-supported system of patriotic education of the youth of the USSR from 1931 to 1991.

The first champions

• In May 1934, the newspaper "Red Sport" reported that the GTO badges Level II numbered 1 - 10 awarded ten commanders of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army listeners Military Academy named by M.V. Frunze: V.N. Savin, A.G. Poruchaev, T.V. Tommola, C. E. Rozhdestvensky, S.I. Yegorov and others. Each of them has received from the People's Commissar of Defense inscribed gold watch with the inscription "To the best athletes of the Soviet Union K.E. Voroshilov."

GTO badges received

• many famous people of the Soviet Union: a miner Alexei Stakhanov, a blacksmith Alexander Busigin, steelworker Makar Mazai driver Peter Krivonos, tractor driver Pasha Angelina, the first Hero of the Soviet Union polar pilot Anatoly Liapidevskii, writers Vishnevsky and Arkady Gaidar, composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoy and others.

• The first champion of the USSR all-round TRP in the individual championship in 1950

became the master of sports in modern pentathlon, a member of the XV Olympic Games in Helsinki 1952 Pavel Rakityansky (1928 - 1992).

Alexei Petrovich Kuvshinnikov

• Among the winners were employees of the Central House of the Red Army (CDKA). One of them - Alexei Petrovich Kuvshinnikov (25/03/1897 - 07/06/1990) - surprisingly versatile athlete, swimming, athletics, cross-country skiing, gymnastics, tennis, and even sixteen sports. He is easily one of the first in the country passed all standards TRP increased difficulty and got the icon Level II at number 18. About 20 years of his life Kuvshinnikov gave to army sport, was the head coach of the Armed Forces of the USSR in volleyball and basketball.

The BEST champions

• Most titled winner of the USSR championship all-round TRP complex - Natalya Maksimovna Bogoslovskaya (born in 1945), according to the results of the competition, she was awarded the title "Honored Master of Sports.“

• The first champion of the USSR in winter combined TRP in 1990 became Igor Sedelnikov (1963), all-rounder, world-class athlete.

• After the breakup of the USSR in 1991, the GTO programme was eliminated in the most of former  Soviet republics . In  Russia the GTO programme did not exist for some ten years, but has begun to be revived since 2003.

• By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on September 1, 2014 in our country entered Russian sports complex "Ready for Labor and Defense" (TRP) to  promoting healthy lifestyles and improve children's health.

"I'm proud of you, Fatherland!"

• The new decryption TRP sounds like: "I'm proud of you, Fatherland!"
• This name-call turned out to be more personal, warmer, it is directly referred to a Russian sacred word "Fatherland.

Modern GTO badges

Complied with the regulations of the complex will be awarded gold, silver or bronze badges, and will also receive a massive sports categories and titles.

The possession of such insignia will give bonuses for admission to higher educational institutions.
