History of the fortress

According to legend, the stone wall was erected by order of the Persian king Khosrov I Anushirvan from the Sassanid dynasty. According to the plan of the powerful ruler, it was supposed to become a defense against enemy raids, which were undertaken bypassing the Caucasus Mountains.

The Derbent fortress reliably closed the narrow passage between the mountains of the Greater Caucasus and the Caspian Sea. Its favorable location, powerful walls and independent sources of drinking water allowed it to withstand the longest sieges. From 735 AD, Dagestan and Naryn-Kala became the center of the Arab Caliphate in Dagestan. From here the teachings of Islam spread. One of the caravan routes of the Great Silk Road passed through the city. It is noteworthy that in the XIV century the fortress did not offer any resistance to the troops of Timur, who went into battle with the Khan of the Golden Horde Tokhtamysh.
