Sarykum

• Sarykum is the largest sand dune in Europe, located in the Kumtorkalinsky district of Dagestan, Russian Federation. This is one of the largest sand dunes in Eurasia. The dune is located in a protected area, part of the Dagestan Reserve, which was established on January 9, 1987.

SARYKUM CLIMATE

• According to observations, the average annual temperature here is +12 degrees Celsius. It is curious that in the whole territory of Dagestan this is the place with the highest temperature. It is hottest here in August, and coldest in February. In the period from May to October, the temperature here stably stays at around +20 degrees, when on the hottest days of summer it can even reach +60 degrees. An interesting fact is that during the night the hot sand cools completely, so there is no constant stuffiness here.

Flora

• The flora is represented by 350 plant species that are typical for meadows, steppes, forests and xerophytes. It was possible to save both the unique representatives of the mountain steppes and the sands of the Caspian Sea. The company of the plant is sandy wormwood, woad, leafless dzhuzgun with white-pink flowers, giant grate, which also chose the upper slopes of the dune. animal world

• The fauna of the protected area is no less diverse. True, meeting with some of the local inhabitants does not bode well for travelers. For example, this applies to Caucasian scorpions - this small insect is widespread in southern Russia. Its venom has a rather strong effect and can cause a person to swell at the site of the bite. The bite of this scorpion is incredibly painful for an adult, and for a child it can be fatal. The lighter the scorpion and the smaller its claws, the more dangerous it is.

Barkhan legend

• Like any unique object, the barkhan Sarykum has acquired many legends. One of them is about Aksak-Temir, who decided to go to war against Tokhtamysh. But in order to defeat the Golden Horde, it was necessary to have a huge army. Aksak-Temir decided to check how huge his army is. He ordered the soldiers to take a handful of sand into a helmet and pour it into one place. And so a grand dune appeared.
