Easter Traditions in Russia

Christian and

pagan rituals

have merged in Russia to create annual springtime customs that celebrate the end of winter and the resurrection of Christ .

Easter in RUSSIA

• In Ukraine Easter has been celebrated over a long period of history and has had many rich folk traditions.

RUSSIAN Easter Egg

• egg is a symbol of birth – it is the origin of life. The egg had magical power to ward off evil spirits , guarantee a good harvest and bring a person good luck.
• And in the 6th century A. D. painted eggs were accepted in Christian tradition as a symbol of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Symbolism

• When Christ was dying on the cross blood flowing from his many wounds fell on the ground. Wherever a drop fell a red Easter egg was created. Christ's mother, Mary, was standing beneath his cross praying and crying. Mary gathered all the eggs into a kerchief and went to Pontius Pilate to ask for permission to bury her son. On her way there she gave an Easter egg to each child she met, along with the admonition to live in peace. Arriving a the palace of Pilate, Mary fainted and the Easter eggs from her kerchief rolled all over the world, from that day on people everywhere decorate eggs at Easter time and give them to each other as an expression of love and peace. Thus in Russian folklore a pagan ritual was incorporated into Christianity.

How to make easter egg ?

• put a skin of several onions into a hot water and let it stay for several hours. Than you make this water boiling and put eggs into a saucepan and cook them for 10 minutes. After it krashanky have very beautiful red color.

Kiev Rus

• The Resurrection was celebrated only from 988 when Kiev Rus was baptized

• Holy Week is the week preceding Easter and the final week of Lent .

• Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entrance of Christ into Jerusalem.

• If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain ." Without Easter —without the Resurrection of Christ —there would be no Christian Faith . Christ's Resurrection is the proof of His Divinity .
